Job description

Maine Township High School District 207 announces a vacancy for a Handyperson 2nd shift at Maine Township High School District 207 beginning with the 2026-2027 school year.

Summary

The Maintenance Handyperson is responsible for assisting with a wide range of maintenance, repair, and facility support tasks to ensure the safe, functional, and well-maintained operation of the school building. Under the supervision of the Building and Grounds Department and school administration, this position performs painting, HVAC support, minor plumbing and electrical work, snow removal, furniture repairs, pool maintenance, and other related duties. The Maintenance Handyperson plays a critical role in maintaining a safe, efficient, and welcoming learning environment for students, staff, and visitors.

REPORTS TO and EVALUATED BY
  • Director of Buildings and Grounds
PERFORMANCE EVALUATION

Performance will be evaluated annually by the Director of Buildings and Grounds in accordance with District 207's support staff evaluation procedures and aligned to district priorities.

SUPERVISES
  • No direct supervisory responsibilities. May provide coordination or direction to interns, vendors, and student media teams as assigned.
Certification & Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent required; additional technical training or certifications preferred.
  • Ability to obtain a Certified Pool Operator (CPO) license within the first 12 months.
  • Basic knowledge of painting, HVAC, electrical, plumbing, and general facility maintenance.
  • Experience operating hand and power tools, ladders, scaffolds, and custodial/maintenance equipment.
  • Ability to lift 50 pounds and safely move furniture, equipment, and other items as needed.
  • Must be conscientious, self-motivated, dependable, and demonstrate a strong work ethic.
  • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions and complete tasks independently with quality and efficiency.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and demonstrate professionalism when interacting with staff, students, and visitors.
  • Additional qualifications as determined by the Director of Buildings and Grounds and Administration.

Duties And Responsibilities
Painting & Facility Maintenance
  • Organize and complete painting projects in classrooms, offices, hallways, stairwells, parking curbs, and other areas as needed, ensuring neatness and efficiency.
  • Replace ceiling tiles throughout the building as required.
  • Assist with furniture repairs, emergency board-ups, door and hinge repair, floor and wall tile repairs, and other general building maintenance tasks.
HVAC & Electrical Support
  • Assist HVAC Technicians with preventative maintenance, including changing belts and filters, oiling/lubricating equipment, servicing classroom unit ventilators, and diagnosing/replacing small motors.
  • Learn Building Automation systems to enable/disable/schedule HVAC equipment.
  • Assist with electrical operations, including changing ballasts, emergency lighting, exit sign and clock maintenance/repair, and replacing light switches.
Plumbing & Facility Systems
  • Assist with minor plumbing operations, such as rodding lines and drains, repairing leaking faucets and valves, changing water filters, and installing towel, soap, and sanitizer dispensers.
  • Participate in fire alarm system operation and sprinkler maintenance, as directed.
  • Obtain a Certified Pool Operator (CPO) license within the first 12 months and assist with pool operations as needed.
Snow and Outdoor Maintenance
  • Assist with snow clearing operations, including shoveling, salting, and plowing.
Professional Responsibilities
  • Perform other related duties and responsibilities as assigned by the direct supervisor.
Additional Responsibilities
  • Provide general support to staff and administration to maintain a safe and functional environment.
  • Complete all assigned work orders in a timely and professional manner.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned by the Director of Buildings and Grounds or administration.
SKILLS TO SUPPORT THESE RESPONSIBILITIES, including but not limited to
  • Technical & Mechanical Proficiency - Knowledge of painting, HVAC, plumbing, and electrical systems; ability to troubleshoot and assist in maintenance operations.
  • Physical Stamina & Capability - Ability to lift at least 50 pounds, move standard school furniture, climb ladders, scaffolds, or lifts up to 30 feet, and perform work on hands, knees, or feet for extended periods.
  • Organization & Multitasking - Highly organized, able to manage multiple tasks efficiently while maintaining attention to detail and meeting deadlines.
  • Communication Skills - Excellent verbal, written, electronic, and radio/phone communication; able to interact professionally with staff, students, and community members.
  • Reliability & Work Ethic - Maintains punctual attendance and demonstrates consistency, integrity, and trustworthiness.

Working Conditions/Environment/Physical Requirements
  • Work Environment: Work is performed throughout the school building, including classrooms, offices, hallways, stairwells, mechanical rooms, outdoor areas, and other facilities. Exposure to dust, cleaning chemicals, paint, and weather conditions are typical.
  • Physical Requirements: The position requires standing, walking, climbing, bending, kneeling, and lifting up to 50 pounds. Tasks may involve prolonged periods on one's feet, working on ladders, scaffolds, or lifts, and performing manual labor both indoors and outdoors.
  • Flexibility & Availability: The Maintenance Handyperson must be adaptable to changing priorities, emergency situations, and scheduled or unscheduled maintenance tasks. Occasional extended hours, evenings, or weekend work may be required to support school operations

Salary & Benefits
  • 12-month (260 paid days) - Start Date tbd
  • Total Number of Paid Hours/Day: 8.00
  • Total Number of Paid Hours: 2,080
  • Hourly Rate: $26.10
  • Approximately $56,317.82 (includes 2nd shift stipend and Semi-skilled stipend) (prorated first year based on start date)
