Job summary

A local school district is seeking a Custodian in Frankfort, Kentucky. Responsible for cleaning and maintaining school facilities, the role requires six months of relevant custodial experience. Overview

The custodian is responsible to perform custodial work for the care, maintenance, protection, and preservation of school plant, its contents, and grounds. This includes cleaning, minor repairs, and general upkeep across multiple school facilities and areas. A state and national criminal history background check and a CAN check are required as a condition of employment.

Performance Responsibilities

• Clean classrooms, departmental offices, teachers’ lunchroom, and guidance suite, performing minor repairs as needed. This includes:
  • Wash pupil desks, chairs and tables; align furniture in proper order.
  • Sweep tile floors daily and wash floors periodically; vacuum carpeted floors where applicable.
  • Empty pencil sharpeners and wastebaskets; clean chalkboards, trays, and erasers.
  • Clean doors, doorplates, thermostats, and light switches; clean bookcases, desks and chairs; wash wall marks.
  • Clean glass in doors, glass walls, windows (including sills, wells, and metal surfaces); clean blinds/shades and adjust uniformly.
  • Clean light fixtures and replace defective parts and bulbs; sand and varnish desks, tables, and chairs as needed.
  • Perform routine maintenance tasks such as oiling motors and replacing filters where applicable; disinfect exterior surfaces.
• Clean restrooms and perform minor repairs as needed. This includes:
  • Clean and disinfect fixtures; empty waste containers; replenish paper towels, toilet tissue, and soap.
  • Wash mirrors, shelves, fixtures, and scrub floors; replace defective parts and perform repairs as needed.
  • Wash glass and doors; ensure cleanliness of walls and fixtures.
• Clean stairways, entrance halls, and hallways; perform minor repairs as needed. This includes:
  • Sweep and dust railings, stairs, and landings; clean interior and exterior glass; sweep mats; clean walls and empty trash.
  • Clean and sanitize drinking fountains; maintain locker exteriors and periodically wash interiors.
  • Maintain floors (wash, wax, buff) and ensure entrances are secure.
• Clean music rooms, home economics area, shop area, administrative offices, kitchen, workroom, storage, furnace and medical rooms; perform minor repairs as needed. This includes:
  • All cleaning tasks applicable from preceding sections; align furniture; dust and clean appliances and counters.
  • Sweep, scrub, wax and buff floors; vacuum carpeted areas.
• Clean locker rooms and physical education rooms and offices; perform minor repairs as needed. This includes:
  • All cleaning tasks applicable from preceding sections; dust and clean lockers and surfaces; perform repairs as needed.
• Clean auditorium; clean cafeteria areas; clean gymnasium with corresponding tasks; inform principal of items requiring repair beyond capability; keep exterior walkways clear of ice, snow, or debris.
• Maintenance and safety: ensure temperatures remain between 68-72°F during school day and activities; check sewage disposal and report needed repairs or replacements; keep premises supplied and secured as directed by the principal.

• Knowledge: Methods, practices, tools and materials used in general custodial work; occupational hazards and safety precautions.
• Ability: Understand and follow oral and written instructions.

Minimum Qualifications

Six months relevant experience in custodial work.

Salary and work year to be established by the board of education.

Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of board policy for classified personnel.
