Job summary

Uvalde Consolidated Independent School District seeks a dedicated Custodian at Dalton Elementary to perform routine cleaning and basic maintenance, ensuring safe, clean facilities for students and staff. This 260-day position reports to the Lead Custodian/Principal and requires the ability to follow cleaning procedures and safety rules.

Starting date is immediate; Wage is paid hourly as per Pay Grade 1- Auxiliary-260 Days; nonexempt status.

Qualifications

Responsibilities

• Cleaning: Maintain a cleaning schedule for floors, chalkboards, wastebaskets, windows, furniture, equipment, and restrooms.
• Cleaning: Keep the school building and grounds neat and clean, including sidewalks and parking areas.
• Cleaning: Comply with local laws for trash storage and disposal; assist with inventory of supplies.
• Maintenance and Repair: Assist lunchroom setup; perform preventive maintenance; regulate HVAC for comfort and efficiency.
• Maintenance and Repair: Make minor repairs and report major needs to the principal; move furniture as directed.
• Maintenance and Repair: Set up facilities for events as needed.
• Safety: Open/close the building; follow procedures for locking and safeguarding facilities; inspect safety of doors and equipment.
• Safety: Use tools safely; report unsafe conditions; follow procedures for lifts and stairs as required.

Primary Purpose:

Follow routine cleaning and maintenance procedures to maintain a high standard of safety, cleanliness, and efficiency of building operations and grounds.

Major Responsibilities and Duties:

Cleaning

• Maintain a cleaning schedule that will include cleaning of floors, chalkboards, wastebaskets, windows, furniture, equipment, and restrooms.
• Keep school building and grounds, including sidewalks, driveways, parking lots, and play areas, neat and clean.
• Comply with local laws and procedures for storage and disposal of trash.
• Assist in maintaining an inventory of cleaning supplies and equipment and request additional supplies as needed.

Maintenance and Repair

• Assist with lunchroom set up, including arranging tables and chairs.
• Perform preventive maintenance to ensure the comfort, health, and safety of students and staff.
• Regulate heat, ventilation, and air conditioning systems to provide appropriate temperatures and ensure economical usage of fuel, water, and electricity.
• Make minor building repairs as needed and report major repair needs to principal.
• Move furniture or equipment within building as directed by principal.
• Assist in setting up facilities for special events.

Safety

• Assist with opening and closing building each school day.
• Follow established procedures for locking, checking, and safeguarding facilities.
• Check daily to ensure that all exit doors are open and all panic bolts are working properly during hours of building occupancy.
• Inspect machines and equipment for safety and efficiency.
• Operate tools and equipment according to established safety procedures.
• Follow established safety procedures and techniques to perform job duties, including lifting, climbing, etc.
• Correct unsafe conditions in work area and report any conditions that are not correctable to supervisor immediately.

Other

• Perform other duties as assigned.
• Report to work on time and absent with a good cause.

Equipment Used:

Buffer, stripper, wet and dry vacuum cleaner, electric drill, hand tools, shampooer, lawn mower, edger, and weed eater.

Frequent walking, standing, climbing, and heavy lifting and carrying. Work outside and inside, on slippery or uneven walking surfaces, and ladders. Exposure to hot and cold temperatures, dust, toxic chemicals and materials.
