Responsibilities include restroom sanitation, floor care, supply ordering, and basic repairs. This position supports organization-wide events and may involve limited grounds/mail support with PPE usage

Job Summary

This position supports the County’s operations by maintaining clean, safe, and orderly facilities across County-owned buildings and grounds. Work is primarily custodial and involves routine and specialized cleaning tasks, equipment maintenance, and supply management. The Custodian contributes to a safe public environment by ensuring facilities are sanitary and function-ready for both internal staff and public use.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

1. Cleans and sanitizes restrooms, including sinks, toilets, urinals, showers, fans, partitions, and drinking fountains; replaces consumables and ensures supply availability.
2. Empties waste containers and removes trash daily; cleans and disinfects trash receptacles and maintains cleanliness in high-touch areas.
3. Dusts and wipes desks, furniture, blinds, equipment, counters, and other surfaces to maintain a hygienic environment.
4. Sweeps, mops, vacuums, and may strip, buff, and finish floors; operates commercial floor and carpet cleaning equipment, including extractors and wet/dry vacuums.
5. Washes windows, mirrors, doorframes, and walls; cleans elevator panels, stairway rails, and ledges.
6. Stocks and manages janitorial closets and submits timely supply orders for approval.
7. Maintains cleaning tools and equipment; performs basic repairs and upkeep to ensure functionality.
8. Assists with special cleaning assignments and coordinates tasks as assigned; reports inefficiencies or issues to supervisor.
9. Assists with organization wide meeting and training events including setting up, breaking down, and resetting furniture or equipment.
10. Provides limited support for grounds maintenance, mail delivery, and snow/ice removal as needed.
11. Appropriately uses all safety equipment and required personal protective equipment (PPE).

Required Education & Experience

• High school diploma or equivalent, or relevant education and experience that demonstrate the ability to perform the essential functions of the position.
• At least one (1) year of custodial or building maintenance experience, or any equivalent combination of training and experience.
• Valid driver’s license.
• Ability to pass a conviction record check.

Preferred Education & Experience

• Previous experience working in a public facility or institutional setting.
• Familiarity with commercial custodial equipment and safety procedures.

Physical & Work Environment Requirements

Work is primarily performed indoors but may include outdoor activities during snow removal or grounds clean-up. Conditions may include exposure to cleaning chemicals, wet floors, dust, and varying temperatures. This position requires standing, walking, bending, reaching, and pushing/pulling cleaning equipment approximately 50% of the time. Lifting and carrying objects up to 40 pounds is required regularly; occasional handling of heavier loads may occur with assistance.
