Cal Poly Pomona is seeking a Custodian to perform routine cleaning and maintenance at the Pomona campus. The role requires safety adherence, ability to read work orders, and efficient housekeeping to keep classrooms, restrooms, and common areas clean.

Typical duties include dusting, mopping, trash removal, restroom sanitation, and operating custodial equipment with a Monday–Friday schedule. This full-time position is probationary with a monthly pay range consistent with CSU standards.

THE DEPARTMENT:

Facilities Planning and Management (FP&M) serves as the lead organization for planning, developing, and maintaining the campus' natural and built environments in support of the university's mission. The department seeks to preserve and enhance CPP's history, aesthetics, physical assets, and natural ecosystems through coordinated planning, design, and construction of buildings, roads, infrastructure, landscaping and other physical improvements. As an advocate on behalf of the university and its auxiliaries, FPM strives to provide facilities that meet scope, budget, operational needs and functional requirements. FPM is comprised of approximately 200 facilities professionals (FTE) that also provides maintenance services including custodial services, landscaping, recycling, building and mechanical trades, energy and utility management, fleet and auto services. The workforce is culturally diverse and multilingual. Its composition includes full-time staff throughout FPM who are also earning their degrees and many whom have graduated from Cal Poly Pomona. The staff includes licensed architects and engineers, accountants, planners, project managers, administrative staff, carpenters, plumbers, locksmiths, painters, electricians, landscape architects, computer technicians, custodians and other building and mechanical trade technicians.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Dust and clean building fixtures such as walls, partitions,ledges, window sills, clocks, blinds, mirrors, entrances, doors,picture frames, hand rails, kick plates, hand plates, Door knobs,door handles, windows and other surfaces.
  • Remove gum, tape, streaks, smudges, spills, fingerprints, marksand graffiti.
  • Dust and clean furniture such as bookcases, chairs, couches,cabinets, shelves, tables, trash cans, etc.
  • Clean desk tops, chair seats and backs of chairs inclassrooms.
  • Clean whiteboards, chalkboards, erasers and trays; replacechalk and erasers, remove chalk dust and broken chalk pieces.
  • Clean thresholds, door frames and window frames; remove carpetstains, clean mats and rugs.
  • Dust mop, clean carpets, sweep, vacuum, wet mop, spot mop,scrub, strip, seal, wax, restore and burnish floors.
  • Police and maintain bulletin boards and remove staples.
  • Remove broken furniture to loading docks; keep stairwells,hallways and entrances clear; re-align furniture to establishedplacement; clean elevators, tracks, stairwells, entrance areas andbreezeways.
  • During rainy season, place mats, wet floor signs and mop asneeded.
  • Scrub and completely disinfect restrooms, locker rooms, showerrooms.
  • Clean and disinfect sinks, toilets, urinals and partitionwalls, floor drains, water fountains, and perform high-gradecleaning disinfection with an approved electrostatic sprayer.
  • Polish chrome and stainless steel; stock & cleandispensers, order supplies; clean, stock, organize and maintaincustodial cart, equipment and supplies.
  • Empty trash and replace worn liners, spot clean trashreceptacles and covers; clean and refill sand ash urns; emptypencil sharpeners.
  • Report work orders as needed to X3030; change lights or call-inwork order; notify lead of safety concerns and of equipment repairneeds.
  • Participate in energy conservation, (minimally lighting),participate in recycling program.
  • Lock and unlock entry doors; unlock non-secured areas by 6:30a.m.; activate and deactivate alarms as needed; notify Policedepartment of security problems.
  • Spray for insects and remove dead rodents.
  • Turn in lost and found items.
  • Sign in and out each shift; pick up and return keys and alarmcards each shift.
  • Proper shoes must be worn during the entire work shift, no opentoe / open heel shoes; wear appropriate personal protectionequipment as needed, i.e. dust mask, rubber boots, knee pads,gloves eye goggles, hearing protection, etc.
  • Label all containers; have knowledge of chemicals regardingsafety and proper usage; do not leave trash or combustiblematerials in closets.
  • Wash and dry towels, dust mops and spin bonnets.
  • Keep simple records and prepare simple reports.
  • Able to read, write and speak English at an acceptable level tocommunicate.
  • Drive state vehicles as needed.
Project Work:
  • High dusting, i.e. vents cobweb removal, light diffusers,clocks, door and window ledges, bulletin boards, chalkboards, maps,audio visual equipment, etc.
  • Seal and clean concrete entrances.
  • Set up for commencement and other special events; event cleanup; flood response and clean up; window cleaning; diffusercleaning; trash can cleaning; wall washing; refinishing floors;carpet cleaning; team and detail cleaning; pre-set equipment andsupplies for projects.
QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Driver License, Valid and in State
  • Related experience.
  • Ability to read and write at a level appropriate to the dutiesof the position.
  • Follow verbal and written instructions to ensure safety.
  • Operate and care for custodial equipment and suppliesapplicable to the position.
  • Use custodial systems such as those used to track work ordersand two-way radios for communication.
  • Observe safety requirements and safe work practices and methodsas required.
  • Perform work involving regular physical activity; and establishand maintain cooperative work relationships.
  • Some positions may require ability to move up to 50pounds.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Two years of custodial experience preferably in a university orcollege environment.
  • Basic knowledge of the principles of the health, safety andsanitation laws and requirements pertaining to custodial work.
  • Thorough knowledge of the tasks and assignments of custodians,including work methods, equipment and cleaning products.
  • Ability to speak, read and write at a level appropriate to theduties of the position.
  • Ability to follow simple oral and written directions.
  • Ability to use and care for janitorial supplies andequipment.
  • Ability to observe and use safe working conditions.

CSU Classification Salary Range

This position is part of the CSUEU bargaining unit 5. The CSUClassification Standards for this position are located on the CSU Classification Standards website. The CSU Salary Scheduleis located on the CSU Salary Schedule website. The classification salary rangefor this position according to the respective skill level is:minimum $3,461 and maximum $4,752 per month. Please refer to theanticipated hiring range for the appropriate salary rate for thisparticular position.
