Job summary

Ball State University is seeking a Custodian for on-campus duties in Noyer Halls. The role runs 7:30-4:00 PM, Monday through Friday, with a pay range of $18.68 to $19.30 per hour and a comprehensive benefits package including medical, dental, and retirement plans. Candidates must be authorized to work in the U.S.

without sponsorship. Responsibilities include cleaning diverse surfaces, maintaining restrooms and floors, trash disposal, and assisting with minor maintenance tasks.

Responsibilities

• Clean, renovate, and renew floor finishes (wood and vinyl), including dust mopping, sweeping, mopping, scrubbing, waxing and sealing.
• Maintain carpeted areas with vacuuming and extraction cleaning.
• Clean and service restrooms, including fixtures, sanitation, and supplies.
• Dust, vacuum, polish furniture and surfaces; clean fixtures, windows, lighting.
• Collect and dispose of trash, recycling, and debris.
• Sweep entrances and exterior areas; clean exterior surfaces.
• Clean appliances and maintain cleanliness of facilities.
• Acquire knowledge of job-related chemicals and safety procedures.
• Lock/unlock doors and maintain access control.
• Change bed linens and arrange furniture as needed.
• Move equipment and supplies; report items needing repair to supervisor.
• Guide and assist student custodial staff as required.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Position Function:

Under supervision, perform custodial work required for the cleaning and maintenance of facilities complying with appropriate procedures and techniques for equipment and cleaning products.

Duties & Responsibilities:

1. Clean, renovate, and renew, resilient, wood, and hard floor surface finishes, i.e., dust mop, sweep, wet mop, spot mop, scrub, polish and spray buff, strip, seal, wax, etc.

Requires the physical ability to stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, reach, balance, stand, walk, push, pull, lift, grasp, and exert up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, 50 pounds of force frequently, and 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Task requires visual ability to read written materials, inspect areas, judge distances, shape, shadow, distinguish colors, etc. Task requires the use of floor machines, wet/dry vacuum, scrubbers, mops, buckets, measuring cups, putty knife, cloth or sponge, eye protection, filter mask, and various chemical products, etc. Task exposes employees to inside environmental conditions, noise, chemicals, fumes, odors, dust, gases, etc. Task requires the mental ability to receive and follow oral instructions and to read, comprehend, and follow written instructions and information.

2. Maintain carpet floor coverings, i.e., vacuum, remove spots and stains, extraction cleaning of carpet and upholstered furniture, etc.

3. Clean and service all areas in restrooms to include, but not limited to, lavatory, toilet, urinal, showers, bathtub areas, etc.

4. Dust, vacuum, clean and/or polish furniture and surfaces; clean facilities, fixtures, hardware and windows; change lighting and clean fixtures as required.

5. Collect and dispose of trash, refuse, recycling materials and debris into designated receptacles.

7. Clean appliances, i.e., stoves, ovens, microwaves, refrigerators, ice machines, washers, dryers, etc.

9. Lock and unlock doors as required to perform job related duties in accordance with departmental policies and procedures.

11. Arrange, move, and/or replace furniture, supplies, and equipment as required; report items requiring repair to supervisor; perform minor repairs to furniture and building fixtures.

Minimum Qualifications:

1. High School diploma or equivalent (GED).

2. No allergies to soaps, cleaning agents, chemicals or environmental factors in custodial service.

3. Must be able to climb ladders, scaffolding of various heights to perform duties.

4. Must be able to read and comprehend all specified policies and procedures for safety, hazardous materials information, University policies, procedures and communications, and perform basic mathematical functions.

5. If required by assignment, you must possess and maintain a valid Driver's License and be insurable under the university's auto fleet policy.

6. Must be able to perform all mental and physical requirements as outlined in each job duty.

7. Must successfully pass manlift certification, if position requires it, within a reasonable period of time after hire.

8. Must have at least one year's work experience (full time or part time).

9. You must be 18 years or older.

Experience in custodial work.
