Position Overview
Full‑time, Regular, Non‑Exempt, Union‑Represented Custodian position (Grade BC03) for the City of Las Cruces.
Environmental and Physical Factors
Work is performed primarily in an indoor environment, with occasional travel to other facilities. Exposure to hazardous chemicals, dust, fumes, noise, and vibration of equipment is common. Protective clothing and equipment are provided and required.
Physical demands include lifting up to 25 pounds, pushing or pulling up to 150 pounds, frequent balancing, bending, stooping, crouching, kneeling, squatting, and reaching from all levels.
The position involves competing demands, multiple tasks, deadlines, and customer issues. Shift work, weekends, nights, holidays, and standby status may be required. Regular attendance is essential. The position is subject to drug testing per applicable regulations.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Perform custodial and janitorial duties in assigned City buildings, including emptying trash cans, dusting books, cabinets, shelves, furniture, and maintaining the neatness and sanitation of buildings and equipment.
- Scrub, strip, mop, buffer, and wax floors using scrubbing machines; wash windows; shampoo rugs using a shampooing machine; use cleaning fluids, chemicals, and protective equipment to clean, sanitize, and deodorize break rooms, restrooms, and offices; disinfect and clean restrooms and showers.
- Sweep walkways and building entrances; pick up custodial supplies; assist in moving office furniture and fixtures with proper equipment; perform general cleanup of grounds.
- Operate power‑driven machinery such as automatic scrubbers, vacuum sweepers, carpet shampoo machines, and buffers.
- May operate a City vehicle to pick up and deliver supplies.
Minimum Qualifications
- Six (6) months of experience in janitorial or custodial work. Experience operating heavy‑duty floor scrubbing and carpet shampooing equipment is preferred.
- Valid driver’s license may be required; an acceptable driving record is necessary.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Basic knowledge of custodial principles, practices, techniques, and procedures; safe use of chemicals and equipment; environmental and safety regulations; customer service practices; record keeping; basic computer skills; City policies and procedures.
- Ability to perform tasks timely and accurately, meet deadlines, adhere to rules and policies, use safety equipment, operate tools and vehicles, detect needed repairs, navigate surfaces, read specifications, use sound judgment, communicate effectively, maintain records, establish working relationships, and exercise initiative and independent judgment within procedural guidelines.
- Skill in using equipment and tools efficiently, maintaining complete records, performing reading, writing, and basic mathematical calculations, operating a personal computer with generic and specialized software, and prioritizing multiple tasks.
