Job summary

The University of Houston System, through FMC - Custodial Services, is seeking a Custodian to perform housekeeping across University of Houston-Clear Lake facilities, maintaining high standards of cleanliness, safety, and sanitation. Weekend work and an appointment on the hurricane ride-out crew may be required.

Responsibilities include cleaning offices, restrooms, classrooms, labs; operating custodial equipment; reporting needed repairs; and following safety regulations.

Qualifications

• Ability to read, speak, write and understand English.
• One year of custodial experience.
• High school diploma or GED preferred.

Description

The Custodian performs housekeeping services in the University of Houston-Clear Lake facilities to maintain a high level of cleanliness, safety, and sanitation. Subject to an appointment on the campus hurricane ride-out crew and weekend work.

Pursuant to the State of Texas Executive Order No. GA-48, this position researches, works on, or has access to critical infrastructure and requires the ability to maintain the security or integrity of the University infrastructure. This position requires personnel to be routinely reviewed to determine whether or not criminal history or continuous connections for the government or political apparatus of a foreign adversary might prevent the employee from being able to maintain the security or integrity of the infrastructure.

Duties

• Cleans, dusts, mops, and vacuums campus offices and suites, classrooms, shops, laboratories, etc.
• Cleans restrooms, locker rooms, drinking fountains, glass mirrors, and replaces towels, toilet paper, and soap.
• Shampoos rugs and upholstery, washes windows, cleans vents and fixtures, scrubs walls, mops floors, and cleans doors.
• Strips, waxes, and buffs floors by hand and with standard 18\" to 20\" buffing machines and burnishers.
• Operates vacuum cleaners, shampooers, buffers, window washers, and similar equipment as needed. Uses germicides, soap, special cleaning compounds, polish, etc., as required.
• Empties waste baskets, disposes of trash, cleans and maintains custodial closets and equipment.
• Cleans and polishes chrome, sink basins, dispenser machines, etc. Cleans chalkboards and chalk trays.
• Cleans, moves, and stores equipment and supplies.
• Reports needed repairs of equipment or buildings to the custodial supervisor by using the building maintenance repair checklist.
• Supports and follows the department's safety regulations and checks all doors to make sure everything is locked and performs related duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

1. Sufficient education to read, speak, write, and understand English.
2. One year of custodial experience.

Preferred Qualifications

1. High School diploma or GED.
2. One year of custodial experience in a university, hospital, or commercial environment.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities

• Must possess the ability to safely use all assigned equipment.
• Willingness and ability to serve on emergency duty assignments as needed.
• Must have the physical ability and stamina to perform strenuous work and lift heavy objects.
