Job summary

Essex Regional Educational Services Commission is seeking a Custodian to maintain a safe, clean school facility and support daily operations in New Jersey. The role covers interior cleaning, floor care, window cleaning, snow removal, and general building upkeep.

Responsibilities include handling deliveries, securing the building, supervising part-time staff, and monitoring HVAC, plumbing, and electrical systems. A Black Seal license and lawful work status are required.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or equivalent preferred.
• Black Seal License.
• Valid Driver's License.
• Vehicle insured and operable.
• Previous experience in custodial/maintenance.
• Previous experience working in a school setting preferred.
• Understanding of OSHA, EPA and Pest Management regulations.
• Able to work flexible hours as needed.
• Able to work overtime if needed.
• Proof of TB test; cleared to work with students.
• Required criminal history background check.
• Proof of U.S. citizenship or legal resident alien status.

Responsibilities

• Clean the interior of the facility daily including classrooms, offices, kitchens and bathrooms.
• Clean all stairways, exit ways, lobby and corridors; polish floors and vacuum rugs.
• Remove garbage and recycling from the building daily; receive deliveries and distribute as indicated.
• Secure facility and monitor security systems; operate HVAC, plumbing and electrical systems.
• Remove snow and ice from exterior steps, ramps, and sidewalks; monitor exterior spaces.
• Supervise and train assigned custodians; attend meetings as directed.

Job description

Responsibilities The Custodian is responsible for, but not limited to:

• Cleaning the interior of the entire facility including all classrooms, offices, kitchens and bathrooms daily.
• Cleaning all stairways, exit ways, lobby and corridors.
• Polishing all floors, cleaning all floor tiles and the vacuuming of all rugs.
• Cleaning all windows, interior and exterior, as needed.
• Removing all garbage recycling from the building daily.
• Receiving all deliveries and distributes them as indicated.
• Securing facility and monitors all security mechanisms and alarm systems.
• Performing general building maintenance and repairs as needed or assigned.
• Removing snow and ice from all exterior steps, ramps, stairs and sidewalks used for building access.
• Monitoring all driveways, parking spaces and other identified exterior spaces of the property for snow, ice and excessive water.
• Monitoring all lawns, shrubs and trees for problems and reporting issues to the Building Principal, or Designee and facilities' consultant.
• Supervising, training, and supporting any assigned part-time, summer, temporary, and custodians.
• Operating and monitors all the heating, ventilation and air conditioning equipment of the building.
• Monitoring all plumbing, electrical, communication, lighting, etc. of the facility and reporting any issues to the Building Principal, or Designee.
• Reporting all building and grounds issues to the Principal, Designee, and Head Custodian.
• Attending on-site and off-site meetings, workshops, staffings, etc. as directed and needed.

• Previous experience in custodial and/or maintenance work
• Previous experience working in a school setting preferred

Pay Rate

Annual Salary - $38,000
