Responsibilities

  • Performs custodial duties (vacuuming, sweeping, mopping, scrubbing, waxing floors, cleaning restrooms, trash removal) in classrooms, hallways, and offices.
  • Maintains inventory of cleaning supplies and materials.
  • Provides room setup for meetings, programs, and activities.
  • Replaces light bulbs and other supplies as needed.
  • Maintains surrounding grounds by collecting trash and debris.
  • Performs minor repairs and security at day end.
  • Operates the heating and cooling system as required.

The custodian carries out the programs and policies authorized by the Head Start Performance Standards.

Under the direction of the Center Manager, the custodian ensures the physical environment is safe and clean for children and their families.

Qualifications
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (included but are not limited to):
  • Performs custodial duties to include vacuuming, sweeping, mopping, scrubbing, waxing floors, washing windows, cleaning walls, dusting, cleaning restrooms and emptying trash receptacles in classrooms, hallways, and offices.
  • Maintains appropriate inventory of cleaning supplies and materials.
  • Provides room set up for meetings, programs, and other activities.
  • Replaces light bulbs, air filters, toilet paper and other supplies as needed.
  • Maintains surrounding grounds by gathering trash and raking debris.
  • Performs minor repairs.
  • Secures building at the beginning and/or ending of the day.
  • Monitors and operates the heating and cooling system.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
  • The ability to stand for sustained periods of time.
  • The ability to sit for sustained periods of time.
  • The ability to walk for sustained periods of time including performing cleaning tasks and facility maintenance.
  • The ability to use hands and fingers to stir, open containers, feel, operate a computer, and perform picking, pinching and whole hand or arm handling tasks.
  • The ability to climb stairs.
  • The ability to stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl as needed when working to perform facility maintenance.
  • The ability to reach, extending arms in any direction.
  • The ability to push or pull objects weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • The ability to talk in order to accurately exchange information.
  • The ability to hear in order to accurately exchange information.
  • The ability to see clearly in order to perform all duties, use a computer, and for reading and writing.
  • The ability to work in indoor and outdoor conditions.
OTHER DUTIES
  • Performs other related duties as assigned by management.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • A High School Diploma or equivalent and six (6) months custodial/maintenance experience.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
  • Must possess knowledge, skills and abilities needed to perform the assigned functions responsibly.
  • Must possess the ability to engage in physical tasks to include a wide range of physical motion.
  • Must possess knowledge principles of safe, cleaning practices.
  • Must possess the ability to travel among center locations and out of town as needed.
  • Must possess the ability to make minor, maintenance repairs.
