Job summary

The Aveda Institute of Chicago is seeking a dedicated Custodian to maintain a clean, safe, and welcoming learning environment for students, guests, and staff.

This full-time, non-exempt role covers early morning shifts (6:00 AM – 11:00 AM) including classrooms, restrooms, and common areas, plus laundry duties and light maintenance.

You should be reliable, detail-oriented, able to work independently, and able to lift up to 50 pounds; prior housekeeping or janitorial experience is preferred.

Qualifications

• Previous housekeeping, janitorial, custodial, or maintenance experience preferred.
• Basic handyman skills (e.g., minor plumbing fixes, lightbulb replacement, general repairs) required.
• Strong attention to detail and commitment to cleanliness and organization.
• Ability to work independently and manage multiple tasks.
• Dependable, punctual, and able to maintain a consistent work routine.
• Positive attitude and willingness to support the team.

Responsibilities

• Sweep and mop classrooms, common areas, restrooms, break areas, and other facility spaces.
• Perform daily sanitation of high-touch surfaces and restrooms.
• Remove trash and recycling and reset spaces for the day ahead.
• Spot-clean and maintain common areas during the day.
• Restock restroom supplies and cleaning products.
• Operate laundry, including washing, drying, folding, and distributing linens, towels, capes, and other school materials.
• Organize and maintain back-of-house storage areas, supply rooms, and laundry areas.
• Perform minor repairs and maintenance tasks.
• Identify and report facility issues to leadership.
• Monitor inventory levels and communicate supply needs.

Housekeeping and maintenance play an important role in maintaining a clean, organized, and welcoming learning environment for students, guests, and team members. At Aveda Institute of Chicago, we are committed to providing a professional, safe, and supportive atmosphere, and our Custodian helps ensure our facility operates smoothly and stays in good working order every day.

Key Responsibilities

Early Morning (6:00 AM – 8:00 AM) — Before guests/team members arrive:

• Sweep and mop all classrooms, common areas, restrooms, break areas, and other facility spaces.
• Perform daily sanitation of high-touch surfaces and restrooms.
• Remove trash and recycling and reset spaces for the day ahead.

Daytime (8:00 AM – 11:00 AM) — While facility is occupied:

• Spot-clean and maintain common areas, restrooms, and break areas throughout the morning.
• Restock restroom supplies, cleaning products, and other facility essentials.
• Wipe down surfaces and shared spaces as needed.
• Manage laundry operations, including washing, drying, folding, and distributing linens, towels, capes, and other school materials.
• Organize and maintain back-of-house storage areas, supply rooms, and laundry areas.

Maintenance & Repairs:

• Perform minor repairs and maintenance tasks, such as fixing faucets, changing lightbulbs, tightening fixtures, and other basic handyman duties.
• Identify and report larger maintenance or facility issues to leadership.
• Support facility upkeep projects as assigned.

Ongoing:

• Monitor inventory levels and communicate supply needs to leadership.
• Follow all safety, sanitation, and infection-control procedures.
• Perform other housekeeping and maintenance-related duties as assigned by leadership.

Schedule

• Monday–Saturday, 6:00 AM–11:00 AM
