Job summary

Illinois Wesleyan University is seeking a full-time on-campus custodian to perform routine cleaning and maintenance across campus facilities. The role requires working various early shifts including weekends and summer hours, with generous benefits such as health, retirement, tuition assistance, and substantial time off.

Responsibilities include restroom and surface cleaning, trash/recycling, floor care, event setup, and sanitation of high-touch areas.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED required.
• Operates basic and mechanical cleaning equipment.
• Maintains positive relations with supervisor, colleagues, students and faculty.
• Ability to work independently or in a group.
• Demonstrates adaptability with diverse community.
• Physical tasks include lifting up to 45 lbs, bending, reaching and repetitive motions.
• Shift schedule includes 4 days/week 6am-2:30pm, 1 day/week 6am-11am, and Sat 6am-8:30am; summer hours 6am-2:30pm.

• Trash and recycle disposal in offices, residence halls, and classrooms.
• Floor and furniture care, sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, carpet extraction and floor stripping.
• Move and arrange furniture and cleanup equipment for tasks.
• Prepare and break down for campus events; assist with larger cleaning projects.
• Disinfect high-touch areas and perform dusting and surface cleaning; use 6-foot ladder for overhead tasks.

Job description

This position is responsible for routine custodial duties. This is a full time, on-campus position. Generous benefits include health, retirement, tuition assistance, and considerable time off.

DUTIES

• Clean restrooms and showers; fixtures, walls, partitions, glass and refills dispensers
• Trash and recycle; disposal areas in offices, residence halls, activity rooms, and classrooms
• Floor and furniture care; sweeping, mopping, vacuuming all floor types; carpet extraction, stripping resilientfloors and stairwells using floor machines, grout cleaning and spot removal. Position requires ability to move furniture, machines and mop buckets necessary for tasks.
• Event preparation and larger cleaning projects; detailed attention cleaning; move, arrange set up and break down for various campus events
• Surface cleaning and sanitation; disinfecting high touch areas; dusting sills, fixtures, flat surfaces and wall washing; reaching lamp fixtures will require use of a 6 foot ladder and reaching overhead

REQUIREMENTS

• High school diploma/GED
• Operates basic and mechanical cleaning equipment
• Maintains working relations with supervisor, fellow workers, students and faculty

• Demonstrates the ability to work with a diverse constituency
• Physical demands: Occasionally requires bending, stooping, pushing, pulling, squatting, crawling, kneeling, climbing, balancing and reaching above shoulder and down to floor and lifting 11‑45lbs; Frequently requires twisting, turning, repetitive hand/wrist motion and forearm rotation; Constantly requires standing, walking, traveling from building to building multiple times a day and lifting and carrying up to 10lbs.
• 4 days/week 6am-2:30pm, 1 day/week 6am-11am, and Saturday 6am-8:30am
• Summer hours: Mon‑Fri 6am-2:30pm

Specific shifts will be discussed during the interview. Occasional overtime (after 40 hours/week).

The final candidate will pass a pre-employment physical and background investigation.
