Job summary

Baltimore City Public Schools is hiring a full-time custodian to clean and maintain school buildings and surrounding grounds. The role requires physical tasks such as sweeping, mopping, window washing, trash removal, and furniture movement, with standard cleaning equipment used daily.

Qualifications

• Completion of the eighth-grade required.
• Minimum of six (6) months of custodial or cleaning experience preferred.
• Valid Maryland Noncommercial Class C driver's license (or equivalent) may be required for certain tasks.
• Working knowledge of cleaning methods, materials, and custodial practices.
• Basic understanding of safety procedures related to custodial work.
• Ability to safely operate and maintain standard cleaning tools and equipment.
• Ability to handle cleaning chemicals in accordance to safety guidelines.
• Ability to read, write, and follow verbal and written instructions.
• Ability to interact with diverse constituencies and convey complicated information with tact and diplomacy.

Responsibilities

Job description

Cleans and maintains building and surrounding grounds. Ensures cleanliness and orderliness of assigned areas. May be required to move furniture and equipment.

Essential Functions

• Sweeps vacuums, dusts, mops, waxes, and buffs floors, hallways, stairs, and building interiors. Operates standards cleaning equipment such as vacuum cleaners' buffers, and mops.
• Washes windows, walls, and ceilings, polishes brass, displays equipment and other objects. Dusts and polishes furniture.
• Cleans and maintains sanitary restrooms.
• Gathers and transports trash and refuse from assigned areas to appropriate disposal locations.
• Moves and rearranges furniture and equipment.
• Removes and installs light bulbs.
• May remove wees and mow lawns. May remove ice and snow from sidewalks, steps and grounds.
• Expected, with others, to maintain supplies and materials.
• Performs and promotes all activities in compliance with equal employment and non-discrimination policies; follows federal laws, state laws, school board policies, administrative regulations, and professional standards.
