TITLE: Custodial Foreman, Buildings & Ground
PUPURPOSE: Under general direction, the custodial foreman is responsible for planning, supervising, and participating in custodial/janitorial operations of District buildings, equipment, facilities, and grounds. Provide students, teachers, and the community with a safe, clean, attractive, comfortable and efficient environment in which to learn and teach .
QUALIFICATIONS:
- High school diploma. Post high school technical training preferred
- Experience
- Successful leadership experience in custodial services which includes knowledge of cleaning procedures, equipment, and supplies preferred
- Experience in a public school setting is preferred
- Must have up-to-date knowledge of industry cleaning techniques, chemicals, and equipment.
- Skills, knowledge, andabilities:
- Demonstrated effective personnel management skills.
- Must be able to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
- Must have knowledge regarding the operation and minor repairs of custodial machinery.
- Must be able to answer emergencies, including assessing problems and taking action in situations such as controlling water flow to minimize damage, restoring power, securing doors and windows, etc.
- Proficient in the use of computers and software used in the District.
- Valid Illinois driver's license.
REPORTS TO: Director of Buildings and Grounds or designee
SUPERVISES: Custodians
MAINTAINS LIAISON WITH:
- Other Buildings & Grounds leadership and administrative support staff
- Central Administration and Principals
- City and County government officials
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITES:
The following are the essential fundamentals to include but not limited to the following job duties:
- Schedules and assigns work for custodial employees with a constant awareness of work priorities; crew and equipment availability; and weather conditions.
- Establishes and enforces operating procedures and work standards that ensure adequate performance and personnel safety.
- Schedules, supervises, and evaluates projects; monitors special event preparations; reviews cleaning requirements; monitors results of projects and programs; performs quality control inspections and follow-up; meets established timelines.
- Maintains awareness of all upcoming and ongoing projects, facilities cleaning needs, and prioritizes resources accordingly.
- Hires, trains, monitors, and evaluates staff performance; provides performance feedback and counseling. Participates in screening candidatesandmaking employmentrecommendationstotheHumanResources Department.
- Collaborates with other supervisors, building principals, and administrators to coordinate work activities with those of other departments.
- Meets or speaks with vendors or other company representatives to coordinate projects and/or purchases.
- Monitors and reviews policies, procedures, and productivity standards for staff; takes action to amend, correct or improve performance; develops job specifications and training manuals; oversees training for respective areas.
- Becomes knowledgeable of the provisions of all relevant collective bargaining agreements to properlyadministerthoseprovisions.
- Performs quality control inspections and analysis of work accomplished to ensure compliancewithcurrentstandards,codes,andregulations.
- Maintains records, incorporates applicable information into site files, records cost data, and provides such reports as may be required relating to facilities.
- Establishes and maintains a safe and effective work environment. Enforces safety rules. Inspects for unsafe acts/conditions and identifies prompt corrective action to eliminate causes of accidents; follows up as required.
- Utilizes District's facilities management platform to route, prioritize, and track work requests and preventive scheduled maintenance tasks; train employees in use of same.
- Coordinates with other District personnel to implement snow removal and salting operations.
- Attends Board of Educationmeetings as required.

EVALUATION: Performance of this job will be evaluation in accordance with provisions of the Board's policy on Evaluation of Professional Personnel.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Employee is regularly required to bend, stoop, twist, turn, reach, lift (up to 50 pounds), carry, pull, push, climb, and kneel; walking and standing approximately 50-75% of each shift.
Employee is expected to express or exchange ideas by means of the spoken word. Talking is important for those activities in which workers must impart oral information to District staff or to the public, and in those activities in which they must convey detailed or important spoken instructions to other workers accurately, loudly, or quickly.
Employee is expected to perceive the nature of sounds and make fine discriminations in sounds, such as when making fine adjustments on running engines.
MENTAL DEMANDS:
Performs a wide range of tasks as dictated by variable demands and changing conditions. Must independently apply abstract principles to solve complex conceptual issues. The Buildings & Grounds department is a fast-paced environment requiring a certain amount of mental agility in making sound decisions quickly.
This position falls under the Service Employees International Union Local No. 73 Custodians \"A\" Team (SEIU A) Contract - 2024-2026 .
