Job description

Job DetailsJob Location: 411 ELM ST - DALLAS, TX 75202Position Type: Full TimeJob Shift: DayJob Category: FacilitiesWho We Are

The Sixth Floor Museum at Dealey Plaza is one of the nation’s leading history museums and the most visited historic site in North Texas. Located within the historic Texas School Book Depository, the Museum preserves and shared the story of President John F. Kennedy, the assassination of President Kennedy, and the enduring legacy of the 1960s through exhibitions, educational programming, collection and public engagement.

Accredited by the American Alliance of Museums, The Sixth Floor Museum stewards an expanding collection of archival materials, photographs, oral histories, audiovisual media, publications and institutional records that document one of the most significant events in American history.

The Opportunity

The Museum Custodial Associate helps maintain a clean, sanitary, safe, and welcoming environment for museum visitors, employees, volunteers, and special-event guests. This position performs routine and detailed cleaning throughout the museum, including galleries, public spaces, offices, meeting rooms, break rooms, restrooms, and designated exterior areas.

Because cleanliness directly affects the visitor experience and the care of the museum’s facilities, this position requires dependability, attention to detail, sound judgment, and consistent adherence to established cleaning and safety procedures. The Museum Custodial Associate works independently and collaboratively with the Facilities team and provides operational support during museum programs and special events.

Key Responsibilities
  • Perform routine cleaning, floor care, and surface sanitization across galleries, restrooms, offices, meeting rooms, and outdoor spaces.
  • Conduct daily walkthroughs to monitor inventory levels, inspect cleaning equipment, and spot-check high-touch areas for sanitation needs.
  • Help enforce museum safety policies, chemical handling protocols, and chemical labeling guidelines to protect visitors and staff.
  • Participate in regular safety reviews, including reviewing Safety Data Sheets (SDS), utilizing proper PPE, and keeping custodial spaces secure.
  • Assist with reporting maintenance concerns, equipment damage, pest activity, or facility hazards through established work-order channels.
  • Support facility safety and emergency preparedness by placing caution barriers around wet floors, maintaining clear walkways, and keeping emergency exits unobstructed.
  • Actively promote clean, accessible, and welcoming environments for all visitors by maintaining high standards of presentation in public-access areas.
  • Assist with event setup, mid-event cleaning, supply replenishment, and space breakdown for programs, meetings, and special events.
  • Support groundskeeping, waste collection, and recycling management by emptying containers and transporting trash to designated collection points.
  • Use digital work-order tools and reporting processes to log completed tasks, track supply usage, and communicate project status with supervisors.
  • Work collaboratively with Facilities, Security, and Visitor Services teams to support daily operations, cover peak periods, and ensure minimal disruption to museum visitors.
QualificationsQualifications

The ideal candidate will bring:

  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
  • Previous janitorial, custodial, housekeeping, or commercial-cleaning experience is preferred but not required.
  • Experience working in a museum, cultural institution, hospitality environment, school, healthcare facility, or other public venue is a plus.
  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, kneel, climb ladders, and lift/carry up to 50 lbs regularly. Must be comfortable working indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions and navigating stairs, galleries, and tight spaces. Ability to work at heights or in confined areas occasionally.
Compensation and Benefits

This position is full-time and non-exempt. Compensation is commensurate with experience and aligned with internal compensation structure. Benefits include medical, dental, vision, life insurance, retirement plan, and paid time off.
