Job summary

San Antonio Water System is seeking a Heavy Equipment Operator-LC/TV to supervise a crew responsible for line cleaning, televising, and assessing the sanitary sewer system. The role includes operating specialized equipment and recording findings in the maintenance system, with an automatic progression to Senior Heavy Equipment Operator-LC/TV after 5 years of continuous service.

The position requires CDL-A with tanker endorsement, wastewater operator license within 24 months, and strong safety

• Valid Texas Class “A” Commercial Driver’s License with Tanker endorsement or the ability to obtain within thirty (30) calendar days.
• TCEQ Class “III” Wastewater Collection Operator License within 24 months of hire.
• Ability to operate medium to heavy equipment.
• Pass position specific physical testing.
• Ability to report to work on time, maintain a good attendance record, and work all designated work schedules.

Responsibilities

• Trains, mentors, supervises, and evaluates crew members by assigning and checking their work for efficiency and overall quality; Initiates corrective action as necessary.
• Communicates effectively both orally and in writing.
• Evaluates and coordinates utility locations for emergency maintenance and construction personnel in order to minimize disruption in utility service to customers.
• Investigates Service Requests by responding and organizing activity during normal and crisis situations in order to maximize efficiency and effectiveness of work personnel.
• Interprets street guides, as-built drawings, schematics, block maps and construction plans.
• Accurately evaluates the condition of the sanitary sewer collection system and initiates repairs, replacement or rehabilitation as necessary and records findings in maintenance management system.
• Operates and maintains highly specialized sewer cleaning and pipe assessment equipment to clean and evaluate the condition of the sanitary sewer collection system.
• Operates other medium to heavy equipment as needed.
• Applies principles of confined space, high pressure, electrical safety and other hazards associated with generally accepted collection system maintenance standards.
• Responsible for the set up of work zone for traffic control and ensures a safe working environment for all employees within the work zone.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

Job Summary

The Heavy Equipment Operator-LC/TV provides day-to-day supervision of a crew responsible for line cleaning, televising, and assessing the condition of the sanitary sewer system. The incumbent performs a variety of advanced skilled duties to include the operation and maintenance of highly specialized sewer cleaning and pipe assessment equipment. In addition, conducts complex condition assessments of job site and initiates pipeline repair, replacement, or rehabilitation as necessary to prevent sanitary sewer overflows. The incumbent provides final evaluations ensuring all findings are accurately recorded in the maintenance management system. This position must promote safety awareness at all times in accordance with SAWS safety guidelines and policies. This job has an automatic progression plan. An employee hired as a Heavy Equipment Operator-LC/TV will automatically advance to Senior Heavy Equipment Operator-LC/TV upon reaching 5 years of continuous experience as a Heavy Equipment Operator-LC/TV with SAWS.

Essential Functions

• Operates other medium to heavy equipment as needed (e.g. bypass pumping equipment).
• Applies principles of confined space, high pressure, electrical safety and other hazards associated with generally accepted collection system maintenance standards.
• Responsible for the set up of work zone for traffic control and ensures a safe working environment for all employees within the work zone.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

Decision Making

• This position receives limited supervision.
• This position makes critical decisions concerning the condition of the sanitary sewer collection system to prevent system overflows.

Minimum Requirements

• High School Diploma or GED.

Physical Demands and Working Conditions

Physical requirements include lifting/carrying up to 168 pounds and lifting/carrying a maximum force of 130 pounds . Subject to standing, sitting, walking, climbing, bending, crawling, squatting, kneeling and working in cramped and strained positions for long periods of time to perform job scope. Requires visual acuity and speech and hearing.

Working conditions are primarily outside with frequent exposure to inclement weather; wastewater; mechanical, electrical, chemical and confined space hazards; offensive fumes; excessive noise; heavy traffic; deep excavations; and animals, to include snakes and insects. This position operates a company vehicle on a daily basis to comply with current SAWS’ Driving policy as amended. One may be required to comply with requirements as specified in applicable regulations for personal protective equipment, including clearance for use of respiratory protection and other associated equipment.

Required to work hours other than regular schedule such as days, nights, weekends, holidays, on-call and rotating shifts.
