Job summary

Gulfshoresal is seeking a lead heavy equipment operator to support the Water & Wastewater Division. The role requires operating heavy and hydro-excavation equipment, performing pre- and post-use inspections, and ensuring safety during construction and maintenance of pipelines, hydrants, valves, and manholes.

The position is based on a 36-hour workweek (Mon-Thu, 6:00am–3:00pm) with on-site duties and potential after-hours calls.

Qualifications

  • Requires High School diploma or GED and minimum two years of related experience.
  • Requires Texas Class A CDL.
  • Preferred Grade C Water Distribution and/or Class II Wastewater Collection Certification by TCEQ.

Responsibilities

  • Operation and maintenance of heavy equipment and specialized excavation equipment.

Job description

This position is based on a 36-hour workweek with the following schedule: Monday - Thursday, 6:00am - 3:00pm.

Position Function - Under the direction of the Director of Public Works and/or Designee, performs assigned duties necessary to support the Water & Wastewater Division to ensure the proper installation, maintenance, repair and/or modification of water and wastewater pipelines, mains, valves, meters, hydrants, and manholes. Performs as the lead heavy equipment operator.

Essential Duties % of Performance

Performs assigned duties necessary to support the Water/Wastewater Division by ensuring the proper construction, repair, and maintenance of water and wastewater pipelines, mains, valves, hydrants and manholes. Duties include, but are not limited to: operation and maintenance of heavy equipment and specialized equipment used for excavation and hydro-excavation activities; daily pre-use inspection of equipment; preparation and loading of necessary materials for equipment operation; safe, efficient operation of equipment; and daily post-use maintenance and inspection of equipment. Responsible for ensuring work site safety and traffic control in compliance with rules/regulations/SOP's. 80%

Performs duties necessary to support the Water and Wastewater division by assisting crews with manual labor, responding to after hour calls and during emergency situations, and performing minor repairs and maintenance on various equipment and vehicles.

May be required to assist other City departments. Performs all duties assigned to the crew he/she leads to include, but limited to: manual labor, heavy equipment operations, etc. 15%

Performs additional duties as assigned. 5%

Standing- Concrete/asphalt work, trash/debris removal, setting up/tearing down work area, etc.

Talking - Communication with co-workers, supervisor, and customers, two-way radios, phone, etc.

Vision - driving, equipment, hand tools, power tools, etc.

Walking - to and from shop, to and from buildings, at worksite, trash/debris removal, concrete/asphalt work, uneven terrain, etc.

Heavy equipment, vehicle, hand-held and power tools and equipment, hard hat, safety and/or protective clothing (e.g., hardhat, goggles, gloves, ear, etc.), steel-toed or composite-toed safety boots/shoes, mobile communication devices, etc.

Environment

Duties are performed primarily within an outdoor environment or setting. Possible exposure to electrical and chemical hazards, water, sewage, vibrations, loud noise, inclement weather, dust, allergens, and mold.

Requirements/Knowledge/Skills/Abilities

Required knowledge and experience is normally obtained through the completion of a curriculum resulting in either a High School diploma or GED, and minimum of two (2) years of work related experience in Construction, Municipal Water/Wastewater repair or maintenance, or related field is required.

Grade "C" Water Distribution and/or Class II Wastewater Collection Certification from the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality, preferred.

Valid State of Texas Class A CDL is required.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working and professional relationships with City employees and officials, and the general public.

Ability to take and follow oral instructions, as well as hand signals.

Ability to work under high demands, short time constraints, and the pressure of a fast-paced work environment.

Ability to properly operate heavy equipment and hydro-excavation equipment.

Thorough knowledge of construction methods, materials and practices with particular emphasis on water and wastewater construction and repair.

Thorough knowledge of work place safety practices and procedures, including but not limited to: lockout/tagout, traffic safety, spotting, etc.

Must be able to work "on-call" or emergency hours.

Must be able to work outside normal business hours.

Must exhibit attention to detail, accuracy, and safety.

Must be able to communicate and present oneself in a professional manner.

Must be able to understand and comprehend technical instructions and manuals.

Must pass all post offer pre-employment processes and/or procedures, to include but not limited to Drug Screen, Physical Examination, and applicable Background Checks.
