Qualifications

stewards an encyclopedic collection of more than 73,000 works of art spanning 6,000 years. The Print Department is responsible for over 28,000 prints, posters and illustrated books from the 15th century to the present. Important areas of the collection include old master prints (e.g. Albrecht Dürer, Rembrandt van Rijn, William Blake, and Francisco Goya); color lithographs (e.g. Toulouse- Lautrec, the Nabis, and an international cross section of mid-twentieth-century artists); Eastern European printmakers (e.g. Jiří Anderle and Vladimír Gažovic̆); Japanese prints (from ukiyo-e masters Utagawa Hiroshige and Utagawa Kunisada through the sōsaku-hanga , e.g. Munakata Shikō, Kosaka Gajin, to contemporary artists, e.g. Ay-O, Shinoda Tōkō and Noda Tetsuya); and a strong cross section of American printmakers from the nineteenth century to the present, including James Abbott Whistler and a special focus on Cincinnati artists Frank Duveneck, Jim Dine, Thom Shaw and The Strobridge Lithographing Company posters.

POSITION SUMMARY

The Curatorial Fellow will work closely with the Curator of Prints on all aspects of the department’s work, including collections research, management, development and care, and departmental projects including exhibitions, publications and programming. The Curatorial Fellow collaborates with museum team members and external stakeholders to ensure the department’s projects and programs are administered in a timely and effective manner. The Curatorial Fellow will also have the opportunity to advance their own area of study by pursuing research projects stemming from their interests and expertise that intersect with CAM collections, which could lead to an exhibition, gallery installation, publication or program.

This position is full-time (35 hours per week), eligible for benefits and paid time off. This three-year Curatorial Fellowship will begin fall/winter 2026.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS & RESPONSIBILITIES

Working under the direction of the Curator of Prints, duties include, but are not limited to:

Collection Management and Development

• Working collaboratively with the museum’s Conservation, Registration, Design, Installation, Learning & Interpretation, Marketing, Photography, IT departments and others to ensure the proper care and presentation of the collection.
• Working collaboratively with staff on projects to organize, rehouse, and rotate works of art in the permanent collections, including planning and coordinating duties.
• Assisting the curator in the development, planning, and installation of temporary exhibitions and rotations within the permanent collections.
• Under the supervision of the curator, project managing gallery rotations, which includes scheduling and coordinating with the Design, Installation and Conservation departments, and contributing creatively to the thematic displays.
• Facilitating incoming gifts and purchase considerations, including research and documentation, condition reports, and other cataloging duties assigned
• Supporting the curator, conservators, and registrars in the coordination of loans.

Public Engagement and Donor Stewardship

• Interpreting and providing information on works in the collection through lectures, docent training, publications, and outreach activities.
• Working with the curator and appropriate museum departments to plan programs for and steward relationships with Friends of Prints affinity group, donors and patrons, artists, docents, and general museum audiences.
• Organizing and administering appointments with external stakeholders to access the prints collection through the Fifth Third Study Room in the Carl M. Jacobs Study Center.

Research, Departmental Support and Administration

• Researching and amending cataloguing information in the collections database, TMS.
• Assisting the curator with organizing talks, lectures, scholarly symposia, study days and related programs as needed.
• Conducting research on objects in the collection and on related topics in consultation with the curator.
• Attending internal curatorial and exhibition planning meetings, and special events related to curatorial division activities.
• Serving as courier to oversee handling and transport of works of art to and from other borrowing institutions, as needed.
• Other special projects or departmental duties as assigned.

Exhibitions and Gallery Rotations

• Assisting in the development, planning, installation, and documentation of exhibitions, including research, maintaining checklists and work schedules, assisting with loan requests and contracts, corresponding with exhibited artists and their representatives and collectors, assisting the curator with publication projects, and archiving relevant digital and paper records.
• Researching, writing, and editing exhibition catalogs, labels and in-gallery text, online text, and other text for other outlets as assigned.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

• MA in Art History or a closely related field, with a specializing and/or demonstrated interest in prints. ABD in a PhD program preferred.
  • If the successful candidate is ABD, accommodation can be made to facilitate dissertation completion during the fellowship.
• Minimum of 2 years of previous museum experience.
• Knowledge of fine art prints and works on paper, including research, proper handling, display, and storage procedures.
• Proficiency in at least one European language, French or German preferred.
• Excellent English written and verbal communication skills with the ability to connect with varied audiences.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, and experience with (or the ability to quickly master) TMS, the museum’s collections management software.
• Strong research and organizational skills; capacity to address simultaneous time-sensitive projects in a professional setting; ability to work both independently and in groups to achieve team goals.
• Valid and unexpired passport. Some domestic and international travel may be required.

Physical Demands:

• Postholder will be required to walk and move about work locations on foot, reach and lift above shoulders, kneel, stand, sit, and use stairs as needed.
• Ability to lift and move items up to 40 lbs. as needed.
