Job summary

The Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art in Hartford seeks the Emily Hall Tremaine Curator of Contemporary Art to lead the development of exhibitions and interpretive programs for post-war and contemporary art across media. You will oversee gallery installations, engage with donors, and guide ongoing MATRIX initiatives that redefine how living artists are presented in a civic museum.

The Curator will collaborate with a diverse curatorial team, contribute to public programs, and manage acquisitions

Qualifications

• PhD in art history or related humanities field with a focus on post-war and contemporary art preferred.
• Minimum of seven years of professional curatorial experience in a museum or comparable institution, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Significant administrative experience and the ability to manage and mentor staff.
• Demonstrated expertise in global contemporary art—including traditional media and non-traditional media such as video, performance, installation, craft, design.

Responsibilities

• Conceive, plan, and implement installations and exhibitions in collaboration with the curatorial team, showcasing the Contemporary Art Collection from diverse perspectives.
• Oversee cataloguing, documentation, and research of objects in the permanent collection, ensuring scholarly rigor and accessibility.
• Collaborate with conservation and collections staff to maintain and preserve objects, including storage and conservation priorities.
