Job summary

The Wadsworth is seeking a Curator for Contemporary Art to lead the interpretation and presentation of post-war and contemporary works, 1960 to present. The role requires guiding exhibitions, expanding the collection, and shaping MATRIX’s next chapter in collaboration with the curatorial team.

You will develop and install gallery installations, oversee scholarly research and public programming, and cultivate donor relationships while advancing DEAI initiatives in a dynamic museum setting.

Qualifications

• PhD or equivalent advanced degree in art history or related humanities field, focus on post-war and contemporary art preferred.
• Minimum seven years of professional curatorial experience in a museum or comparable institution, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Significant administrative experience and the ability to manage and mentor staff.
• Demonstrated expertise in global contemporary art across media, and strong scholarship and public speaking records.

Responsibilities

• Conceive, plan, and implement installations and exhibitions with the curatorial team.
• Oversee cataloguing, documentation, and research of objects in the collection.
• Collaborate with conservation and collections staff on preservation priorities.
• Research and produce wall labels, wall texts, brochures, and interpretive materials.
• Initiate proposals to build the collection through gifts and purchases.
• Lead public programs, talks, and visits; respond to inquiries.
• Represent the museum through talks, publications, exhibitions, and collaborations.
