Job summary

The Research Foundation of The City University of New York (RFCUNY) is seeking an Advisor for the CUNY EDGE program at John Jay College. The role delivers integrated advising that links academic planning with career development and student support.

Reporting to the Director, you will manage a caseload, promote persistence and completion, and assist with the HRAFellowship program, including workshops and timesheet tracking. Hybrid work is available.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in education, counseling, social work, public administration, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 2 years of advising, case management, or student support services.
  • Ability to support diverse student populations using a student-centered and culturally responsive approach.

Responsibilities

  • Provide holistic one-on-one and group advising integrating academics, career development, and support to help students persist and graduate.
  • Guide students in selecting majors, planning coursework, and staying on track for timely graduation.
  • Support students in exploring career interests, internships, and job opportunities.
  • Maintain a caseload and deliver proactive support, monitoring progress and intervening early.
  • Assist students navigating financial aid, scholarships, and public benefit requirements.
  • Contribute to program communications, materials, and initiatives.
  • Document advising interactions and outcomes in the DMS and EAB Navigate systems.
  • Support the HRA Fellowship Program, onboarding, workshops, and timesheet tracking.

Program Overview

CUNY EDGEis a grant-funded partnership between the New York City Human Resources Administration (HRA) and the City University of New York (CUNY),operatingacross 20 CUNY colleges. Housed within Academic AffairsatJohn Jay College, the program supports students receiving Cash Assistance in achieving academic success, completing their degrees, and preparing for meaningful careers.


CUNY EDGEutilizesa holistic model that integrates academic advising, career development, and case management to support students from enrollment through graduation and into the workforce.


Position Summary

Reporting to the Director, the Advisor plays a critical role in delivering an integrated advising experience that blends academic planning, career development, andpersonalindividualized student support. The Advisor manages a caseload of students and providesproactive,student-centered guidance to promote persistence, completion, and post-graduation success.TheAdvisor alsosupportstheHRAFellowshipProgram-a paidopportunity for CUNY EDGE students.The programpromotes a culture of studentengagement and skilldevelopment viaworkshops, weekly timesheets, andongoing participation requirements.


This role requiresa holistic approachthat connects students’ academic experiences with career pathways, while also supporting their navigation of institutional and public benefit requirements. The Advisor fosters a supportive and inclusive environment where students feel empowered to achieve their goals.


This is a grant-funded positionwith the Research Foundation of CUNY.


Core Responsibilities


  • Provideholisticone-on-one and group advising that intentionally integrates academic planning,career development, and individualized supportto help students persist, graduate, and achieve post-graduationgoals

  • Guide studentsin selectingmajors, planning coursework,scholarshipprocess,and staying on track fortimelygraduation

  • Supportstudentsin exploring career interests, understandingworkforce expectations,applying for internship/ employmentopportunities,and career developmentresources.

  • Maintain a caseload anddeliverconsistent,proactivesupport, including monitoringacademicprogressand intervening early to addresschallenges

  • Assiststudents in navigatingfinancial aid, scholarships, andpublic benefit requirements, includingdocumentation processes-such ascompleting theHRA 154- schoolletter

  • Contribute to program communications, materials, andinitiatives

  • Maintainaccurateandtimelydocumentation ofadvisinginteractions and student outcomes in theData Management System (DMS– CUNY EDGE’s custom database)and EABNavigate

  • Support withthe HRAFellowship Program, includingstudent onboarding,orientation, workshops,timesheet tracking,case notes, and ongoing studentengagement

  • Closely collaborating with other college departments, including financial aid, the bursar, the registrar, counseling center, career center, academic advising units, etc. Refer students, obtain student information, and receive referrals

  • Contribute to audit readiness and reportingbymaintainingthorough records, supporting documentation collection, and ensuring alignment with programandHRArequirements

  • Participate inprogram planning,staff meetings, and continuous improvement efforts, including data collection andassessments

  • Perform other duties as assigned by the CUNY EDGE Director

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications


  • Bachelor’s degree in education, counseling, social work, public administration, or a related field

  • Minimum of 2 years of experience in advising, case management, or student support services

  • Demonstrated ability to support diverse student populations, including first-generation and low-incomestudents

  • Strong communication, organizational, and documentation skills

  • Ability to build trust and rapport with students using a student-centered and culturally responsiveapproach

  • Proficiencyin Microsoft Office and similar tools


Preferred Qualifications


  • Master’s degree in a related field: Public Administration, Social Work, Psychology, Sociology

  • Experience in higher education advising or workforce development programs

  • Familiarity with public benefits systems and/or compliance requirements

  • Experience using student information systems oradvisingplatforms (e.g., Navigate, CRM tools)

  • Experience supporting internships, job placement, or career programming

  • Bilingualproficiency(Spanish preferred)


Pay Range

$55,000–$60,000
