Geographic Notation: This position’s current geographic location is on Oahu. Applicants from all islands are encouraged to apply. The position’s geographic location will be determined based on the selected candidate’s proximity to the closest available Division office on the island which they reside.

The primary purpose of this position is to review and evaluate development proposals that may affect historic properties and make recommendations to ensure the preservation of historic sites, including burial sites. Specifically, this position reviews, evaluates, and makes recommendations on inventory reports, significance assessments, and mitigation/preservation plans. This position is also responsible for monitoring and evaluating the implementation of mitigation measures, registering burial sites, reviewing and researching genealogical claims, performing Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA) related responsibilities when applicable, and other duties as assigned.
Citizenship Requirement: Applicants must be citizens, permanent resident aliens, or nationals of the United States. Non-citizens with unrestricted employment authorization from the U.S. Immigration and Naturalization Service may also apply.
Recommended Qualifications:
Knowledge of: Historic preservation review process, applicable State and Federal burial laws, rules, and regulations; negotiation and/or conflict resolution strategies; and Microsoft Office.
Skills/Abilities to: Conduct research with minimal guidance; work with various ethnic community groups, including but not limited to Native Hawaiian organizations; and write clear, concise reports.
Recommended Education: A bachelor’s degree from an accredited four (4) year college or university in Hawaiian Studies, Ethnic Studies, History, Anthropology, or a closely related field.
Recommended Experience: Demonstrated experience working with ethnic organizations. At least three (3) years of experience conducting historical research, which must have included a review of cultural practices, ethnography, and oral history, is preferred. Experience in genealogical research is also preferred.
License Requirement: Applicants with a valid license, type 3 or higher, to drive in the State of Hawaii is preferred.
Quality of Experience: Possession of the required number of years of experience will not in itself be accepted as proof of qualification for a position.
