Purpose of This Position

This position is responsible for performing a variety of kitchen duties as directed by the supervisor. Duties will be performed in accordance with current applicable federal, state, and local standards, guidelines, regulations, Independence House policy and procedures, the organization’s ethical statement, and resident rights, subject to the associate handbook.

Job Duties/Responsibilities
  1. Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide dietary services appropriate to the needs of the residents served in his/her neighborhood or area.
  2. Demonstrates leadership and personal accountability to ensure quality food service is provided to every customer.
  3. Keeps the work area clean and sanitary. Operates the dish machine, washes pots, pans, and other food service items. Sweeps and mops kitchen and service areas. Removes trash and garbage as directed.
  4. Restocks shelves, counters, and storage areas with food service equipment.
  5. Adheres to unit standards of dress and attends scheduled meetings and all mandatory competency training.
  6. Displays service excellence by practicing the mission, vision, and values of the organization to promote resident satisfaction.
  7. Complies with organizational policies, procedures, and practices to ensure quality job performance and regulatory compliance.
Required Qualifications
  • Minimum 16 years old.
  • Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to write simple correspondence. Ability to speak in sentences.
  • Ability to apply commonsense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Deal with standardized situations with only occasional or variable complexities.
  • Ability to add and subtract two-digit numbers. Ability to count.
  • Positive service-oriented interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Must demonstrate knowledge and skills necessary to provide age-appropriate care, understanding growth and development over the lifespan, and interpret information to meet patient needs as per policies and procedures.
  • This position is classified as “at risk” for possible occupational exposure to blood-borne pathogens (HBV, HIV, etc.).
Preferences
  • High school diploma or equivalent, or up to one year of related experience or training; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Physical Demands

This position requires a full range of body motion with intermittent activities such as walking, lifting, bending, squatting, and twisting. The associate will be required to sit for up to one hour a day, stand for four to six hours, and walk for one hour daily. Must be able to lift twenty to fifty pounds and reach above shoulder level. Good eye-hand coordination and finger dexterity are necessary. Corrected vision and hearing within the normal range are required. The individual may be exposed to hazards such as burns, electrical hazards, cuts, falls, strains, and steam burns, and to heat and cold temperatures in the kitchen and storage areas. Excellent verbal skills are essential for daily tasks.
