Job description

The practice of computed tomography is performed by healthcare professionals responsible for the administration of ionizing radiation for diagnostic, therapeutic, or research purposes. A computed tomography technologist performs computed tomography procedures that create the images needed for interpretation and the performance of interventional and therapeutic procedures at the request of and for interpretation by a licensed practitioner.

Core Competencies
  1. Perform all the duties of a CT Technologist I.
  2. Capable of safely administering contrast or other imaging agents, including identifying incompatibilities and interactions.
  3. Assess patient risk for allergic reactions to contrast media and other medications prior to administration, following appropriate protocols for escalation.
  4. Evaluate lab values before administering contrast media or related medications and beginning the examination.
  5. Provide accurate explanations and instructions to patients and families using age-appropriate language, ensuring understanding and consent.
  6. Perform ordered exams or therapy adhering to established imaging protocols, respecting patient comfort and ability.
  7. Adhere to policies and utilize protocols to ensure expected outcomes are met.
  8. Document deviations from protocol or patient-specific issues affecting image quality.
  9. Notify healthcare providers of any immediate clinical concerns based on procedural findings or patient condition.
  10. Complete post-processing, image display, and transfer timely for physician review.
  11. Ensure timely order closure, charge entry, and PACS QA completion.
  12. Cover open shifts as appropriate based on competency level.

Knowledge and Competency
  1. Experienced and competent in routine and complex studies.
  2. Complete understanding of technical standards, scope of practice, department and health system policies, safety, and service standards.
  3. Thorough knowledge of imaging equipment, software, instrumentation, and ancillary patient care equipment.
Education, Certification & Experience

Requires certification by the American Registry of Radiology Technologists (ARRT) or Nuclear Medicine Technologist Certification Board (NMTCB), ARRT-CT, BLS, and successful completion of a 6-month orientation. Candidates with at least one year of experience may be hired directly into this role.
