Job summary

Fuse seeks a Cryogenic Systems Engineer to design, Commission, and maintain cryogenic and vacuum systems for the Z-Star facility. You will lead cryopump integration, 4 K target cooling, and cryogenic infrastructure management in a high-stakes research environment.

You will specify instrumentation, monitor safety, and ensure compliance with ASME/CSA standards while coordinating with operations and safety teams. Strong hands-on cryogenics background is essential.

Qualifications

• B.Sc. or M.Sc. in Physics, Mechanical Engineering, Engineering Physics, or Chemical Engineering with demonstrated cryogenics specialization.
• 2+ years hands-on experience designing, operating, or maintaining cryogenic systems at liquid-helium temperatures (4 K).
• Proficiency with cryopump systems including sizing, installation, and regeneration cycles.
• Strong knowledge of vacuum science: pumping speed, conductance, outgassing, leak detection, and pressure measurement.
• Experience with liquid-helium dewars, cryostats, and transfer lines.
• Familiarity with cryogenic instrumentation: thermometry, pressure, flow, and liquid-level measurement.

Responsibilities

• Design, procure, install, and commission the multi-stage vacuum system for the Z-Star chamber.
• Define cryopump sizing and regeneration schedules to meet target pressures and shot rates.
• Develop vacuum protocols including venting, inert gas back-fill, and controlled pump-down for shot operations.
• Develop procedures for 4 K target cryogenic cool-down, hold, and warm-up.
• Manage cryogenic infrastructure, dewars, transfer lines, and safety procedures.
