Job summary

Fuse in the United States is seeking a Cryogenic Systems Engineer to design, commission, operate, and maintain dual cryogenic systems for the Z-Star facility. You will serve as the resident cryogenic and vacuum expert, leading system integration, instrumentation, and safety protocols for high-repetition pulsed operations.

Qualifications

  • B.Sc. or M.Sc. in physics/engineering with cryogenics specialization.
  • 2+ years designing/operating cryogenic systems at 4 K.
  • Experience with cryopump sizing, installation, and regeneration.
  • Strong vacuum science knowledge: pumping speed, outgassing, leak detection.
  • Experience with liquid-helium dewars, cryostats, and VJ transfer lines.
  • Familiarity with cryogenic instrumentation (thermometry, pressure, flow, liquid levels 4–300 K).

Responsibilities

  • Design, procure, install, and commission the vacuum system for the Z-Star chamber.
  • Define cryopump sizing, placement, and regeneration schedules to meet base pressure and shot rate requirements.
  • Develop vacuum protocols including venting, backfilling with inert gas, and controlled pump-down procedures.
  • Monitor vacuum performance; diagnose outgassing sources, leaks, and pump degradation.
  • Design and commission the 4 K target cryogenic system, including cryostat and transfer lines.
  • Develop loading, cool-down, hold, and warm-up procedures for the 4 K target.
  • Characterize and minimize cryogenic heat loads to maintain stable 4 K conditions.
  • Manage cryogenic logistics: liquid helium/N2 supply, dewars, transfer operations.
  • Train operations staff on cryogenic safety and emergency procedures.
  • Specify and maintain cryogenic instrumentation and integrate into control systems.
  • Ensure safety/compliance per ASME/CSA and ITAR considerations.
