Job summary

Fermilab in Batavia, IL seeks a staff level Cryogenic Engineer to support existing cryogenic systems and rapidly growing project needs. The role will operate helium cryogenic systems, develop procedures, and analyze thermal, hydraulic, and structural aspects to ensure reliable operation.

The successful candidate will collaborate with a diverse team, leverage AI/ML tools where applicable, and contribute to project tasks while meeting safety and regulatory requirements.

Qualifications

• BS in Engineering from an accredited institution with 4+ years of engineering experience or 2+ years with an MS/PhD in Engineering
• MS in Engineering, preferred
• Strong background in thermodynamics, fluid dynamics and heat transfer
• Available for off-hour call-ins and occasional overtime
• Able to see the big picture and pay attention to detail while solving problems across various tasks
• Ability to read mechanical drawings and process flow schematics
• Proficient in engineering software for analysis, reporting and presentations
• Qualified to work in oxygen-deficiency hazard or interlocked areas
• Cryogenic thesis/project or on-job experience preferred
• Helium cryogenic experience preferred
• Knowledge of ASME Pressure Vessel/Piping Codes preferred
• Knowledge of AI/ML tools preferred

Responsibilities

• Operating Helium Cryogenic Systems
• Developing operating procedures and solving system problems
• Improving cryogenic operations through process engineering improvements
• Maintaining and coordinating alarms and maintenance plans
• Performing thermal, hydraulic and structural analysis and cryogenic design tasks
• Collaborating with staff to verify system function and performance
