Job summary

Stanford University’s Cryo-EM Specialist role at SLAC’s Cryo-EM and Bioimaging Division supports 7 cryoEM instruments and two cryoET systems. You will train users, maintain microscopes, and assist with data collection and processing.

The ideal candidate has a related science degree with 2+ years of hands-on cryo-EM experience, strong analytical and communication skills, and the ability to work independently and in a team.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's or Master's in a related science field with two years' experience, or a PhD.
• Strong understanding of transmission electron microscopy and cryo-EM.
• Proficiency with computers, databases, and scientific software.
• Excellent analytical judgment and communication skills.
• Ability to work independently and within a team.
• Strong organizational skills and detailed recordkeeping.

Responsibilities

• Conduct cryoEM specimen preparation.
• Operate electron microscopes for cryo specimens.
• Screen cryo-EM specimens for suitability in structural research.
• Perform preliminary image data quality evaluation, load samples and tune microscopes.
• Collect image data for users.
• Provide evaluation on quality of data collected.
• Interface with computing team for data collection, storage and processing support.
• Perform image processing.
• Assist researchers on cryoEM projects and oversee experiments.
• Help orient and train new staff and users.
• Develop and support data collection enhancements.
• Develop instruction material and contribute to research reports and publications.
• Maintain microscopes and prep apparatus; interface with vendor engineers.
