Job summary

The University of Washington’s Institute for Protein Design seeks a Research Scientist/Engineer 3 to advance cryo-EM and negative-stain structural characterization of computationally designed proteins. You will process EM data, build models, and collaborate across teams on diverse protein projects.

You’ll mentor junior researchers, develop SOPs for workflows, and coordinate instrument maintenance and national center access, contributing to high-impact publications.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Biochemistry, Biology, Physics or related field with 4 years of EM-based sample characterization experience.
  • Expertise in single-particle cryo-EM workflows and data processing.
  • Proficiency with cryo-EM software (cryoSPARC, Relion, EMAN, Dynamo, IMOD).
  • Proficiency with structural modeling software (Phenix, Rosetta, Chimera, ISOLDE, Namdinator, COOT).
  • Strong Linux/Unix command-line experience.
  • Experience mentoring researchers in cryo-EM/ns-EM.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and collaborate across teams.

Responsibilities

  • Cryo-EM and ns-EM structural characterization of designed proteins and nanomaterials; 3D reconstructions and model validation.
  • Train and mentor junior researchers and staff in EM methodologies.
  • Oversee IPD instrumentation maintenance and scheduling for EM equipment and national center collaborations.
