The Department of Revenue's (DOR) Compliance Division is looking for an instinctive individual to fill a Revenue Agent 4 (RA4), Special Agent vacancy on its Compliance Review Research and Tax Discovery Training Unit in Tumwater, WA.

This position is designated as the statewide expert in theory review for tax discovery in the Compliance Review, Research, and Tax Discovery Training Unit (CRRT) and is responsible for important key tasks that support the Tax Discovery program in areas such as theory review of assessments, tax policy, divisional training, taxability research, and field/Revenue Agent support. Here are some of the other duties you can expect:
Demonstrated ability to lead, develop, and support others—through training, coaching, mentoring, or guiding teams, gained through progressive experience in roles requiring staff development, accountability, and ethical judgment, including maintaining confidentiality while managing shifting priorities.
Proven ability to build and maintain effective working relationships with business owners, attorneys, CPAs, law enforcement, other agencies, and internal partners, demonstrating strong interpersonal skills, professionalism, accountability and tact in challenging or sensitive situations while remaining approachable and open to constructive feedback.
Demonstrated progressive experience ensuring consistency and accuracy in divisional theory review on complex, high-dollar tax assessments, gained through independent review of investigations involving multiple tax classifications, penalty applications, and statutory, regulatory, and agency policy requirements.
Proven ability to research and interpret complex tax laws, rules, policies, and emerging tax issues, developed through experience conducting in-depth taxability research using agency systems, Technical Advice Requests, excise tax advisories, determinations, and tax policy updates.
Demonstrated skill providing technical instruction and guidance to tax discovery staff, acquired through experience developing, writing, and presenting training on the full tax discovery cycle including lead generation, investigations, nexus standards, taxability analysis, and assessment issuance.
Demonstrated ability to develop and maintain best practice guidance and training resources, acquired through preparing responses for management, updating instructional materials, working tax discovery cases for practical insight, and participating in taxpayer education efforts.
Proven analytical skill in reviewing settlement proposals, legislation, rule revisions, and interdivisional collaboration documents, developed through providing written feedback and policy analysis to the CRRT District Compliance Manager.
Proven ability to collaborate across the agency on tax theory matters, developed through participation in interdivisional tax assessment meetings, Quality Audit Standards updates, and ongoing coordination with Audit Standards and Procedures, ITA, ARHD, Appeals, and Executive Management.
Demonstrated capability resolving sensitive, complex, and time-critical taxpayer issues, gained through independently reviewing taxability determinations, troubleshooting errors in workpapers and narratives, and advising managers and agents on appropriate reporting and assessment practices.
Proven experience maintaining current knowledge of statutory, regulatory, and tax policy changes, acquired through monitoring updates across divisions, researching external developments, and ensuring timely communication and training delivery to divisional staff.
