Qualifications

The City of Bluffdale is currently accepting applications for Crossing Guards. This part-time position is relied upon to cover morning and afternoon regularly scheduled crossings. When on duty this position is responsible to assure safe crossing of school children and the general public at intersections and other road crossings. Substitute Crossing Guards are also needed; substitutes must be available to fill in as needed to cover morning and/or afternoon regularly scheduled crossings. Schedule can vary by individual crossing location, based on the corresponding school’s calendar and bell schedule.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

• Observes road traffic to determine best timing for road crossings; welcomes children and pedestrians into designated crossing locations; escorts children and pedestrians as needed to assure safe crossings.
• Monitors behaviors of children and educates children regarding traffic safety as appropriate.
• Observes general activity while on duty to detect suspicious behaviors; reports such observations.
• Reports work time and work activities to the Receptionist.
• Performs related duties as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

• Graduation from high school; sufficient education to demonstrate an aptitude or ability to perform above and related duties; and sufficient experience to demonstrate a working knowledge of practices and procedures associated with above duties.
• Successful candidates must be able to: follow direction, be cordial when interacting with the public, be accountable, be a self-starter, focus on safety, and have a dependable work ethic.
• Preference given to candidate with knowledge or willingness to learn Excel (used for timekeeping).

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

• Daily exposure to weather extremes and seasonal conditions; may require some manual labor, such as applying ice melt, to keep crosswalks clear from safety hazards.
