Qualifications

• Must be able to communicate in English and pass a health/fitness exam and background check.

Responsibilities

• Stop traffic flow with sign and hand signals at school crosswalks and intersections to allow pedestrians to safely cross.
• Instruct pedestrians, especially children, in traffic safety.
• Direct pedestrians to stay on curb until traffic has stopped and assist them in crossing.
• Report suspicious or unusual activity and perform related duties as assigned.

The City is seeking a dependable and safety-minded individual to serve as aCrossing Guard within the Police Department’s Traffic Unit. This position plays an important role in protecting students, families, and the community by enforcing traffic regulations and promoting safe pedestrian movement at or near designated school crosswalks.

Work hours vary based on school schedules and operational needs.

The functions listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this position. Management may assign additional functions related to the type of work of the position as necessary.

• Reports suspicious and/or unusual activity.
• Stops traffic flow with sign and hand signals at or near school crosswalks and intersections to allow pedestrians to safely cross the roadway.
• Instructs pedestrians, primarily children, in elements of traffic safety.
• Directs pedestrians to remain on curb until traffic has stopped.
• Assists pedestrians with safely crossing the street or roadway.
• Performs related work as assigned.

Requires High School graduation or GED equivalent supplemented by six (6) months of experience; or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.

Must successfully complete a state certification course with a passing score of 75% or higher and recertify annually.

Must possess and maintain a valid state driver's license with an acceptable driving history.

• Ability to primarily work outdoors in varying weather conditions with broad variations in temperature and noise should be expected as a standard part of this job.
• Reliable transportation.
• Ability to be flexible with assigned duty locations and be on time, which may vary from time to time.
• Able to communicate in English.
• Able to pass an occupational health medical exam, drug test and background investigation.
• Must not have been convicted of a misdemeanor/felony involving moral character, false statements, perjury, any act that can classified under the enhancement statute of Domestic Violence, resisting a law enforcement officer, battery on a law enforcement officer, any offense committed upon or in the presence of a child or any other offense related to violence.

Mathematics
