Job Description
The job of Assistant Coach is to assist with the design and implementation of an activities program from 8th grade through varsity level in accordance with applicable rules and regulations related to the sport; to provide supervision of student athletes during all aspects of the program; to use sound instructional techniques; to serve as a positive role model; and to serve as a liaison between the school, program, other schools, community, and various organizations.
This role reports to the Head Coach of the particular sport.
Essential Functions
- Analyze and assess opposition’s strategies and strengths/weaknesses prior to and/or during athletic events.
- Assess student athletes for providing feedback and determining team placement.
- Assist the Head Coach in developing and promoting off‑season programs and opportunities (open facilities, strength training, speed development, team camps, etc.).
- Attend meetings, workshops, conferences, and supporting activities (parent orientations, recognition events, banquets, etc.).
- Collaborate with coaching staff to develop the program (instructional techniques, organization of practice, supervision guidelines, etc.).
- Communicate program needs and recommend expenditures for activities and supplies.
- Develop game strategies and plans for preparing team and athletes.
- Develop practice regimes (strength, speed, agility, nutrition, injury prevention, etc.).
- Evaluate facilities and playing fields for safety hazards and recommend modifications.
- Instruct student athletes to promote individual growth in skills, rules, teamwork, and sportsmanship.
- Maintain records (statistics, insurance, permission forms, schedules, equipment inventories, etc.).
- Oversee student managers, volunteers, and other support staff.
- Promote the athletic program through clinics, skill camps, and community meetings.
- Respond to inquiries from students, parents, and staff.
- Supervise student athletes during all participation areas to ensure safety.
- Work with the Head Coach to monitor athletes’ academic eligibility.
- Assist in fundraising and budgeting for activity accounts.

Job Requirements: Minimum Qualifications

Experience: Relevant experience with increasing levels of responsibility.
Education: High school diploma or equivalent.
Equivalency: Associates Degree preferred.
Certificates and Licenses
- Missouri State Teaching Certificate or completion of NFHS Fundamentals of Coaching Course.
- 60 college credit hours minimum.
Continuing Education / Training
- Sports first aid training.
- CPR/AED training.
Clearances
- Criminal Justice fingerprint/background clearance.
