Job Responsibilities

Essential Functions

  • Analyzes and assesses opposition’s strategies and strengths/weaknesses for game/event prior to and/or during athletic events to develop a game plan/approach.
  • Assesses student athletes to provide feedback on individual performance and/or determine team placement.
  • Assists the Head Coach in developing and promoting off‑season programs and opportunities for student athletes (e.g., open facilities, strength training, speed development, team camps) to strengthen and improve skills.
  • Attends meetings, workshops, conferences, etc. to receive and convey information.
  • Attends supporting activities (e.g., parent orientations, recognition events, banquets) to provide information and recognize participation.
  • Collaborates with other coaching staff on instructional techniques, practice organization, and supervision guidelines to develop the program at all levels.
  • Communicates to the Head Coach needs of the program and recommends expenditures for activities and supplies that will enhance the athletic program.
  • Develops game strategies and practice plans to prepare the team and individual athletes for competition.
  • Develops training regimes (strength, speed, agility, nutrition, injury prevention) to enhance athletic performance.
  • Evaluates facilities and playing fields for hazards or inadequate equipment, and makes recommendations to reduce injury risk.
  • Instructs student athletes to promote growth in athletic skills, rules, teamwork, and sportsmanship.
  • Maintains records (statistics, insurance, signed forms, emergency info, schedules, equipment inventories) to comply with district, conference, and state requirements.
  • Oversees student managers and volunteers, providing direction and monitoring activities.
  • Promotes the athletic program through clinics, skill camps, and community meetings to increase interest and participation.
  • Responds to inquiries from students, parents, and school staff for information, assistance, and direction.
  • Supervises student athletes during all participation activities to ensure a safe environment.
  • Works with the Head Coach to monitor academic eligibility and provide interventions for students who need assistance to maintain eligibility.
  • Develops a fundraising and budgeting action plan with the Head Coach to maintain and balance activity accounts.

Other Functions

Performs additional related duties as assigned to ensure efficient and effective functioning of the unit.

  • Performs basic math, including fractions, percentages, and ratios; reads technical information; composes documents; facilitates discussions; analyzes situations.
  • Uses injury prevention protocols; follows public relations protocols; conforms to safety practices and procedures.
  • Schedules activities, meetings, and events; collects and collates data; operates equipment.
  • Works with diverse individuals and groups; handles data using defined processes; maintains confidentiality.
  • Analyzes issues and creates action plans; interprets guidelines; resolves problems with equipment.
  • Shows leadership, models sportsmanship, motivates student athletes, enforces discipline, directs team building, and works extended hours, including evenings or weekends.

Education

  • High school diploma or equivalent (required).
  • Associate’s degree preferred.

Experience

  • Job‑related experience with increasing responsibility is desired.

Certificates and Licenses

  • Missouri State Teaching Certificate or NFHS Fundamentals of Coaching Course (completed).
  • ≥60 college credit hours.

Continuing Education / Training

  • Sports First Aid Training.
  • CPR/AED Training.

Clearances

  • Criminal Justice Fingerprint/Background Clearance.
