Job summary

University Health Associates in Fairmont, West Virginia, seeks a certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist to deliver comprehensive anesthesia care in collaboration with supervising physicians. The CRNA will monitor patients during induction, maintenance, and emergence of anesthesia and ensure safety per department policies, maintaining a high-volume, fast-paced environment.

The role requires WV RN and APRN licensure, and CRNA Board Certification or recertification.

Qualifications

• Current licensure as a Registered Nurse, and APRN (Nurse Anesthetist) in the State of West Virginia is required.
• Board Certified or Recertified by the Council on Certification of Nurse Anesthetists.

Responsibilities

• Maintains excellence in airway management and usage of all airway adjuncts.
• Takes appropriate precautions to minimize risks of infection.
• Participates in the pre-anesthetic evaluation of the patients and the selection of anesthetic agents and techniques.
• Performs techniques of the anesthetic plan including IV access, monitoring, intubation, and arterial punctures as per protocol.
• Monitors patient response to anesthesia and informs the anesthesiologist of any adverse conditions; manages induction, maintenance, and emergence of anesthesia.
• Administers IV fluids and blood products as indicated in collaboration with the anesthesiologist.
• Documents patient status in the anesthesia record.
• Performs safety checks on anesthesia equipment and assembles supplies as needed.
• Reviews documentation for informed consent and participates in the surgical pause with the team.
• Communicates effectively with peri-operative and post-operative care teams.
• Provides anesthesia care in the absence of an anesthesiologist in life-threatening emergencies.
• Assists with teaching and evaluation of CRNAs, GRNAs, SRNAs, and medical students.

Job description

This position provides anesthetic care for all types of patientsand procedures in cooperation with the supervising or medicallydirecting physician and under the standards of the Department ofAnesthesiology and in accordance with hospital policies andprocedures. The CRNA administers anesthesia to patients renderingthem insensitive to pain during surgery/procedures. Providecontinuous vigilant observation of patients by monitoring thepatient’s physical reaction to sedatives, analgesics, andanesthetic agents and informs the anesthesiologist of any adversecondition that potentially threatens the safety or care of thepatient.

Will provide anesthetics in non-academic facilities and will berequired to safely maintain a high volume, rapid paceenvironment.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS :

CORE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

• 1. Maintains excellence in airway management and usage of allairway adjuncts. i.e., bullard, fiberoptic scope, ILMA, etc.
• 2. Takes appropriate precautions to minimize risks of infection ofpatients, and other health care professionals.
• 3. Participates in the pre-anesthetic evaluation of the patientsand the selection of anesthetic agents and techniques.
• 4. Performs appropriate techniques of the anesthetic plan such as,but not limited to, insertion of intravenous catheters, insertionof invasive monitoring catheters according to established protocol;endotracheal intubation and extubation; performing arterialpunctures for interpretation of arterial blood gases.
• 5. Monitors patient’s physical response to the anesthetic andinforms the anesthesiologist of any adverse condition. Manages theanesthesia process to include induction, maintenance, and emergenceof general, regional, and monitored anesthesia cases. Recognizesabnormal patient responses to anesthesia or to any adjunctivemedication or form of therapy. Initiate corrective measures. 6.Determines the need for additional laboratory tests and provideresuscitative care as necessary. Evaluates and manages the patientin the immediate post-operative period.
• 6. Administers IV fluids relative to the patient’s medical historyand surgical procedure. Administers blood products after obtaininga hematocrit and then consultation with the anesthesiologist.
• 7. Appropriately documents the patient status in the anesthesiarecord.
• 8. Performs all required safety and performance checks onanesthesia-related equipment and verify the appropriate suppliesbefore initiating care. Procures and assemble equipment andsupplies as indicated if anesthesia tech is not available.
• 9. In accordance with departmental and regulatory compliancestandards, reviews appropriate documentation for informed consentand identifies appropriate surgical site during SBAR withcirculating RN and holding room RN. Participates in surgical pausein the OR with entire surgical team in accordance with departmentaland regulatory compliance standards.
• 10. Communicates appropriately with all individuals involved in theperi-operative and post-operative care of the patient.
• 11. In a life-threatening emergency, functions responsibly byproviding anesthesia care in the absence of ananesthesiologist.
• 12. Assists with the teaching and evaluation of newly-hired CRNAs,GRNAs, SRNAs, and medical students in the clinical area.
• 13. Assumes responsibility and is accountable for controlledsubstances according to department and hospital policy and Stateand federal guidelines.
• 14. Efficiently provide anesthetics conducive to rapid turnover andhigh case volume.
