Job summary

UHA University Health Associates in Morgantown, WV is seeking a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist to provide anesthetic care in collaboration with the supervising physician and within hospital policies.

Responsibilities include pre-anesthetic evaluation, anesthesia planning, airway management, IV access, monitoring during induction and emergence, safety checks, documentation, and on-call coverage as needed. Applicants must hold WV RN licensure and NBCRNA certification.

This position provides anesthetic care for all types of patientsand procedures in cooperation with the supervising or medicallydirecting physician and in accordance with hospital policies andprocedures. This position administers anesthesia to patientsrendering them insensitive to pain during surgery/procedures.Provide continuous vigilant observation of patients by monitoringthe patient’s physical reaction to sedatives, analgesics, andanesthetic agents and informs the surgeon/anesthesiologist of anyadverse condition that potentially threatens the safety or care ofthe patient.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS :
  • 1. Current licensure as a Registered Nurse in the State of WestVirginia, or applicable state where services will perfeormer.
  • 2. Board certified or recertified by the National Board ofCertification and Recertification for Nurse Anesthetists.
CORE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • 1. Maintains Patient safety at all times.
  • 2. Maintains excellence in airway management and shall be familiar in the usage of all airway adjuncts. i.e., bullard, fiberopticscope, ILMA, etc.
  • 3. CRNAs shall work within their scope of delineated clinicalprivileges.
  • 4. Takes appropriate precautions to minimize risks of infection ofpatients, and other health care professionals.
  • 5. Maintains the appropriate confidentiality of patient informationat all times.
  • 6. Participates in the pre-anesthetic evaluation of the patientsand the selection of anesthetic agents and techniques.
  • 7. Performs appropriate techniques of the anesthetic plan such as,but not limited to, insertion of intravenous catheters, insertionof invasive monitoring catheters according to established protocol;endotracheal intubation and extubation; performing arterialpunctures for interpretation of arterial blood gases.
  • 8. Monitors the patient’s physical response to the anesthetic and informs the surgeon and/or anesthesiologist of any adverse condition. Manage the anesthesia process to include induction,maintenance, and emergence of general, regional, and monitoredanesthesia cases. Recognize abnormal patient responses toanesthesia or to any adjunctive medication or form of therapy.Initiate corrective measures. Determine the need for additionallaboratory tests and provide resuscitative care as necessary.Evaluate and manage the patient in the immediate post-operativeperiod.
  • 9. Administers IV fluids relative to the patient’s medical historyand surgical procedure. Administer blood products after obtaining ahematocrit and then consultation with the surgeon and/oranesthesiologist.
  • 10. Documents the patient status in the anesthesia recordappropriately.
  • 11. Performs all required safety and performance checks onanesthesia-related equipment and verify the appropriate suppliesbefore initiating care. Procure and assemble equipment and suppliesas indicated if anesthesia tech is not available.
  • 12. Reviews appropriate documentation for informed consent andidentify appropriate surgical site during SBAR with circulating RNand holding room RN. Participates in surgical pause in the OR withentire surgical team in accordance with departmental and regulatorycompliance standards.
  • 13. Communicates appropriately with all individuals involved in the peri-operative and post-operative care of the patient.
  • 14. In a life-threatening emergency, functions responsibly by providing anesthesia care in the absence of an anesthesiologist.
  • 15. Assists with the teaching and evaluation of newly-hired CRNAs,GRNAs, SRNAs in the clinical area.
  • 16. Assumes responsibility and is accountable for controlledsubstances according to department and hospital policy and Stateand federal guidelines.
  • 17. Maintains a level of professionalism at all times
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
  • 1. Ability to see details at close range (within a few feet of theobserver).
  • 2. Must deal calmly and effectively with high stress situations;ability to maintain composure.
  • 3. Requires being reliable, responsible, and dependable, and fulfilling obligations.
  • 4. Being open to change (positive or negative) and to considerable variety in the workplace.
  • 5. Ability to work congenially with individual differences inability, personality, and interests.
WORKING ENVIRONMENT:
  • 1. May be in close contact with individuals who have infectiousdiseases and with toxic, harmful, or potentially hazardouscompounds, solutions, and medications.
  • 2. Must observe rigid, standardized guidelines to guard against disease and other dangers, such as those posed by radiation, accidental needle sticks, chemicals used to sterilize instruments, and anesthetics. In addition, may be vulnerable to back injury when moving patients.
  • 3. May be required to be on call or work nights, weekends, and/orholidays.
