What this job involves

The Data Center Operating Engineer is responsible for delivering best practice systems and resolving issues related to all data center electrical and mechanical infrastructure (UPS, MV electrical systems, generators, cooling systems, etc.).

What is your day-to-day?
  • Responsible for maintaining, monitoring, and performing preventive maintenance and continuous operation of all building systems to maintain 100% uptime, including fire/life safety, mechanical systems (HVAC, chillers, CRAC, CRAH, plumbing, controls), electrical systems (lighting, UPS, ATS, STS, PDU, generators, primary switchgear, power distribution, transformers), and hot water systems.
  • Monitor operation, adjust, and maintain refrigeration, chilled water, and air conditioning equipment; boilers, ventilating and water heaters; pumps, valves, piping, and filters; and other mechanical and electrical equipment. Record readings and make adjustments as necessary to ensure proper operation.
  • Analyze the operation of various systems, determine causes of malfunctions, and take corrective actions. Comply with departmental policies for the safe storage, usage, and disposal of hazardous materials. Maintain a clean and safe workplace.
  • Learn and understand the data center site to manage incidents and events that could put critical systems at risk.
  • Manage work orders, including CMMS, vendor management, and customer-facing tickets.
  • Understand and comply with emergency escalation procedures.
  • Perform additional job duties as required.
Physical Work Abilities and Requirements:

This position requires frequent walking, climbing, bending, kneeling, lifting, stooping, and working/extending overhead, including:

  • Walking in large, campus-like settings.
  • Lifting a minimum of 50 lbs.
  • Climbing stairs and navigating rooftops to access equipment.
  • Using ladders up to 30 ft. and working from heights.
  • Ability to climb a ladder with a 300-lb weight limit.
  • Must be able to work different schedules, including holidays, and respond to site emergencies.
Desired Experience and Technical Skills

Required:

  • 2+ years of experience working in a data center/critical facility.
  • Experience with building systems, including UPS, emergency generators, and switchgears.

Preferred:

  • Corrigo experience.
  • Universal EPA 608 certification.
  • Training in NFPA70E.
