Job summary

CyrusOne is seeking a Critical Environments Operator to join our 24/7/365 Operations & Maintenance team. This role involves operating, monitoring, and maintaining data center infrastructure to ensure peak reliability. Candidates must have a commitment to safety, clear communication skills, and the ability to manage multiple priorities.

Successful applicants will support critical systems across different levels requiring various years of experience, from entry-level to expert positions. The job requires a flexible schedule, including participation in on-call rotations.

Qualifications

  • No prior data center experience required; ideal for candidates eager to learn with 0-2 years in operations or customer service.
  • 3–5 years of experience in Tier 2–4 data centers or technical facility maintenance.
  • 5–7 years data center or building engineering experience; journeyman-level skills in relevant fields.
  • 7+ years of relevant experience with HVAC certification or Journeyman/Master Electrician license preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Monitor and operate data center systems for reliability.
  • Respond to building system alarms and conduct root cause analysis.
  • Execute preventive maintenance work orders according to established procedures.
  • Track work orders and labor hours using CMMS.
  • Coordinate with contractors and enforce safety protocols.

Job description

Overview

Critical Environments Operator – 24/7/365 Operations & Maintenance team responsible for ensuring mission‑critical data center infrastructure runs at peak reliability. Operate, monitor, and maintain electrical, mechanical, and HVAC/R systems while upholding the highest standards of safety, workmanship, and customer service.

Responsibilities
  • Monitor and operate data center mechanical, electrical, and HVAC/R systems to ensure continuous uptime and reliability.
  • Respond to building system alarms, prioritizing critical load protection, equipment preservation, and root cause analysis.
  • Execute preventive maintenance work orders following SOPs, MOPs, EOPs, and MMRs.
  • Use a Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS) to track work orders, labor hours, and PMs.
  • Coordinate with contractors and vendors; enforce Lockout/Tagout and other safety protocols.
  • Perform equipment and system operational modifications, including critical switching and safe working area setup.
  • Maintain awareness of and compliance with all company, government, and client policies, procedures, and EHS requirements.
  • At senior levels: provide mentorship to junior operators, lead critical switching events, and participate in capacity planning and reporting.
Levels & Experience
  • Level I: No prior data center experience required. Ideal for candidates eager to learn data center O&M with 0–2 years in operations, maintenance, or customer service. Strong safety mindset required.
  • Level II: 3–5 years of experience in Tier 2–4 data centers or a technical facility maintenance role. Entry‑level skills in electrical, mechanical, or HVAC/R. Familiarity with CMMS and work order processes is a plus.
  • Level III: 5–7 years of data center or building engineering experience. Journeyman‑level skills in electrical, mechanical, or HVAC/R. Ability to troubleshoot systems and guide less experienced team members.
  • Level IV: 7+ years of relevant experience. Active HVAC certification or Journeyman/Master Electrician license preferred. Demonstrated expertise and leadership in operations and vendor management.
Schedule Requirements

This position requires rotating 12‑hour shifts (6:00AM–6:00PM or 6:00PM–6:00AM) on a repeating 14‑day cycle. Shift assignments rotate on a 28‑day cycle.
