Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Ensure compliance with applicable medical protocols, company policies, healthcare regulations, and local EMS agency requirements.
  • Maintain thorough familiarity with treatment protocols, response requirements, and quality assurance procedures in accordance with local EMS agency policy.
  • Provide clinical guidance and support to ambulance teams, including assistance with critical or complex cases within the coordinator's authorized scope.
  • Lead quality assurance and performance-improvement activities, including the review of incident reports, patient feedback, clinical documentation, and overall service performance.
  • Organize training sessions, required in-services, and continuing education programs for the ambulance medical team.
  • Maintain current knowledge of medical equipment used in ambulance operations and support its proper use, readiness, and maintenance.
  • Assist with developing, implementing, and reviewing policies and procedures intended to improve the efficiency, quality, and safety of patient transport.
  • Maintain the level and type of licensure, certification, training, and competency required to perform the responsibilities of a CCT registered nurse.
  • Ensure CCT units remain in a state of readiness, including required medical supplies, controlled substances, medications, and equipment.
  • Serve as a liaison among ambulance crews, hospital staff, patients, external healthcare facilities, and EMS agencies to support clear communication and efficient patient care during transport.
  • Manage and coordinate scheduling and staffing for nurses and medical crew members assigned to transport services.
Education and Licensure
  • Current, unrestricted Registered Nurse license issued by the State of California.
  • Graduate of an accredited nursing program.
  • High school diploma or equivalent required; bachelor's degree in nursing or a related field preferred.
  • Ability to maintain all licenses, certifications, competencies, and regulatory requirements throughout employment.
Qualifications

Before employment as an SCT nurse within Los Angeles County, the individual must satisfy one of the following qualification pathways:

  • Have at least one year of full-time-equivalent nursing experience, based 36 to 40 hours per week, within the preceding three years as an RN providing direct patient care in a critical care area of a licensed acute care hospital or as an SCT provider relevant to the type of SCT transports the RN will perform, whether adult or pediatric; or
  • Hold a current Certified Emergency Nurse (CEN), Critical Care Registered Nurse (CCRN), Certified Transport Registered Nurse (CTRN), or Certified Flight Registered Nurse (CFRN) certification.
  • Minimum of one year of experience as a Critical Care Transport (CCT) Nurse.
Required Clinical Certifications
  • Current American Heart Association Basic Life Support Provider certification.
  • Current American Heart Association Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support Provider certification.
  • Current American Heart Association Pediatric Advanced Life Support Provider certification when assigned to or responsible for pediatric SCT transports.
Knowledge Skills and Abilities
  • Strong knowledge of critical care transport operations, clinical documentation, patient safety, and applicable regulatory requirements.
  • Sound clinical judgment and the ability to remain organized and composed in urgent or high-acuity situations.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to coach employees and collaborate across departments.
  • Ability to review documentation objectively, recognize trends, and support practical corrective actions.
  • Proficiency with electronic patient-care reporting, scheduling, communication, and document-management systems.
  • Demonstrated professionalism, reliability, discretion, and commitment to respectful teamwork.
Physical and Working Requirements
  • Must be able to perform the essential functions of the position with or without reasonable accommodation, including:
  • Frequently standing, walking, sitting, bending, kneeling, reaching, and using hands for clinical and administrative tasks.
  • Assisting with the movement of patients, equipment, and supplies consistent with company safety procedures and the demands of CCT operations.
  • Working in ambulances, healthcare facilities, stations, and outdoor environments, including exposure to variable weather and operational conditions.
  • Using appropriate personal protective equipment and complying with infection-control and exposure-prevention requirements.
  • Responding to operational needs during assigned hours, including weekends, nights, or holidays when required by the position.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Prior CCT, SCT, transport nursing, emergency, intensive care, or comparable critical care experience.
  • Previous supervisory, charge nurse, clinical coordination, education, or leadership experience.
  • Experience with quality assurance, chart review, competency validation, and clinical performance improvement.
  • Working knowledge of Los Angeles County EMS policies and specialty care transport requirements.
