Job summary

Responsibilities

  • Monitor fluid intake/output and assist with feeding as needed.
  • Perform simple treatments, dressings, venipuncture, ECG and pulse oximetry and record results.
  • Respond to life-threatening emergencies and assist with transfers and patient care as directed.

HOURLY RANGE: $18.93 - $24.58

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: The work involves providing direct care to patients in need of critical care at the Erie County Medical Center Corporation (ECMCC). The incumbent participates in the care of patients in an acute care setting within all stages of illness and changing nursing needs. Work is performed under the direct supervision of a higher-ranking nursing employee. Supervision is not a function of this position. Does related work as required.

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES:

Performs basic and personal care procedures, including but not limited to feeding, bathing, shaving, changing of gowns and bed linens, assisting with ambulation and range of motion, skin care and bowel and bladder elimination;

Obtains vital signs and notifies supervisor of changes;

Monitors fluid intake and output;

Performs simple treatments and dressing changes, non-complicated eye washing, finger sticks, routine specimen collection, venipuncture, 12 Lead ECG and pulse oximetry and records measurements;

Applies abdominal binders, arthrombic pumps/leggings, splints, prosthetic devices, antiembolic stockings and ace wraps

Responds appropriately to life-threatening emergencies;

Cares for patient’s personal need items such as eyeglasses, hearing aids, canes, wheelchairs and other adaptive devices;

Completes property inventory and secures patient property according to hospital policy;

Provides nutritional care needs including passing and collecting diet tray and nourishment, set up trays and adaptive feeding equipment, feeds or assists as necessary;

Transports and assists patient utilizing wheelchairs, stretchers, or beds;

Transfers patients from bed to cart/chair/wheelchair and back utilizing transfer assist devices such as medical lifts;

Identifies changes in patients’ condition and notifies supervisor;

Distributes clean linens and makes beds;

Assists in discharging and transferring patients from critical care;

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS: Good knowledge of nursing standards in accepted patient care; working knowledge of standard precautions and infection control precautions; skill in performing and demonstrating nursing techniques; demonstrates concern and caring for patients; ability to locate, operate and set up patient care related equipment; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with a diverse constituency; ability to understand and carry out oral instructions; ability to communicate clearly, both orally and in writing; tact; positive attitude; capable of performing the essential functions of the position with or without reasonable accommodation.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma and one (1) year of direct patient care experience in a healthcare setting; or:
  • Possession of thirty (30) semester credit hours from a school of professional nursing*; or:
  • Completion of a course of study in a school of practical nursing approved by the New York State Education Department; or:
  • Completion of a certificate program as a medical assistant, medical office assistant or closely related program from a college* or university* or post‑high‑school institution.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

Possession of Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification from an ECMCC approved provider within sixty days (60) of appointment and maintenance throughout duration of appointment.
