HOURLY RANGE: $21.265 - $25.910

NY HELPS:
This title is part of the New York Hiring for Emergency Limited Placement Statewide Program (NY HELPS).
For the duration of the NY HELPS Program, this title may be filled via a non-competitive appointment, which means NO EXAMINATION IS REQUIRED, but all candidates must meet the minimum qualifications of the title for which they apply.
At a future date (within one year of permanent appointment), it is expected employees hired under NY HELPS will have their non-competitive employment status converted to competitive status, WITHOUT HAVING TO TAKE A CIVIL SERVICE TEST.
Employees will then be afforded with all of the same rights and privileges of competitive class employees of New York State.
While serving permanently in a NY HELPS title, employees may take part in any promotion examination for which they are qualified.

DISTINGUISHING FEASTURES OF THE CLASS:

The work involves providing direct care and related non- clinical duties to patients in need of rehabilitation care in the Acute Medical Rehabilitation Unit, Medical/Surgical Units or the Long-Term Care Facility at the Erie County Medical Center Corporation (ECMCC). The incumbent provides daily activities to patients and performs other duties as assigned. Work is performed under the direct supervision of Supervisor of Rehabilitation Medicine, other professional or para-professional nursing employee or Senior Therapists. Supervision is not a function of this position. Does related work as required.

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES:

Prepares patients for therapy; completes transfers to facilitate readiness; transports patient to therapy sessions utilizing wheelchairs, stretchers, beds or medical lifts;

Assists with patient’s ambulation;

Performs range of motion exercises for upper and lower extremities;

Performs venipuncture when assigned to Medical/Surgical Units or Long-Term Care Facility;

Performs pulse oximetry and records measurements;

Obtains and records vital signs;

Utilizes pain scale and appropriate intervention when providing patient care;

Identifies changes in patient’s condition and notifies RN or therapist;

Responds appropriately to life-threatening emergencies;

Provides for nutritional needs including passing and collecting trays and nourishments, setting up trays and adaptive feeding equipment; feeds or assists in feeding as necessary;

Assists with activities of daily living;

Completes property inventory and secures property according to hospital policy when assigned to Medical/Surgical Units or Long-Term Care Facility;

Utilizes glucometer to measure blood glucose levels;

Performs 12 Lead Electrocardiograms;

Collects non-sterile specimens when assigned to Medical/Surgical Units or Long-Term Care Facility;

Complies with hospital restrain policy, infection control policies and procedures, and personal protective equipment policy.

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS:

Good knowledge of principles of therapeutic interventions, operations and maintenance of equipment used in therapy activities; good knowledge of cardiopulmonary resuscitations techniques; good knowledge of location, operation and maintenance of hospital and patient equipment; ability to locate, operate and maintain various hospital equipment; ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions; ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing; ability to establish and maintain effective working relations with a diverse constituency; ability to utilize a variety of electronic software applications; capable of performing the essential functions of the position with or without reasonable accommodation.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma; and:

  • One (1) year of experience as an aide in a hospital, long-term care, skilled nursing, acute rehabilitation or therapeutic setting; or:
  • One (1) year post high school education in Nursing, Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, Speech Therapy or closely related field; or:

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

Possession of Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification from an approved ECMCC provider within sixty (60) days of appointment and maintenance throughout duration of appointment.

IN ADDITION, IF ASSIGNED TO THE LONG-TERM CARE FACILITY:

Possession of a Certified Nursing Assistant Certification as issued by the New York State Department of Health at time of appointment and maintenance throughout duration of appointment.

NOTE: Verifiable part-time and/or volunteer experience will be pro-rated toward meeting full-time experience requirements.
