MercyOne seeks a part-time Critical Care Paramedic to respond to EMS calls, provide high-level pre-hospital care, and assist in hospital care as needed. You will follow NIMS standards, document care, and maintain equipment and PPE while working in a rotating shift pattern.

The role emphasizes teaching, peer review, and adherence to Trinity Health/MercyOne mission and safety protocols across diverse patient ages from neonate to geriatric.

Qualifications

  • Parademic course graduate with current Iowa/Illinois certification.
  • Iowa/Illinois Paramedic certification or RN exemption depending on role.
  • Must meet driving and MVR requirements and maintain PPE compliance.

Responsibilities

  • Deliver critical care paramedic level emergency medical care.
  • Respond to ambulance calls and document care per protocols.
  • Assist in ED with airway management & medication administration.
  • Provide age-appropriate care across all ages.
  • Perform vehicle checks, restock and clean equipment.
  • Complete patient care documentation after calls.
  • Mentor EMTs and other staff; participate in training.
  • Maintain PPE usage and safety procedures.

Job description

Employment Type: Part time Shift: Rotating Shift Description: Delivers timely and effective critical care paramedic level emergency medical care to patients of all ages in both emergency and non-emergency situations, ensuring stabilization and/or resuscitation as needed due to illness or injury. Responds to ambulance calls, follows established system protocols and NIMS standards for scene management, and accurately document all care provided. When available, assists in the Emergency Department by performing advanced airway management, medication administration, and assists with delegated tasks such as assessments, vital signs, IV initiation, ECGs, and documentation, as well as decontamination, cleaning, and restocking of equipment.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Rapidly assess patients and provide lifesaving care according to protocol .
  • Initiate basic and advanced airway management .
  • Provide direct patient care in pre-hospital and hospital settings within the Critical Care Paramedic scope of practice , including the administration of approved medication s .
  • Provide age-appropriate care across neonate, infant, child, adolescent, adult, and geriatric populations.
  • Operate ambulance safely; transport sick or injured persons while avoiding motions detrimental to patients.
  • Cover on-call hours and staff special events as directed to meet departmental needs.
  • Perform daily/weekly vehicle and rig checks; maintain , restock and clean unit after each run .
  • Complete patient care documentation after each call and in the Emergency Department as needed.
  • Participate in peer review and chart audits .
  • Training & Education Complete all required training and maintain competency in required skills, including departmental, site specific, and organization -wide programs.
  • Maintain personal training logs and track continuing education hours (CEHs).
  • Assist in orientation of new EMTs , Advanced EMTs , Paramedics , and Critical Care Paramedics ; provide education to staff and the public as requested.
  • Precept and mentor EMT , Advanced EMT , and Paramedic students.
  • Maintain a professional public image; participate in public relations activities.
  • Support Community Paramedicine program tasks (e.g., medication reconciliation, brief home safety review, patient assessment, red flag education, follow-up coordination, and documentation).
  • Use radios and communication systems effectively
  • Collaborate with providers, nurses and other healthcare professionals.
  • Ask for assistance when needed to ensure safety for all involved.
  • Attend required safety programs; consistently use personal protective equipment; follow departmental emergency procedures.
  • Maintain a safe working environment; report and remove unsafe equipment.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned .
  • Maintains a working knowledge of applicable Federal, State, and local laws and regulations, Trinity Health’s Organizational Integrity Program, Standards of Conduct, as well as other policies and procedures in order to ensure adherence in a manner that reflects honest, ethical, and professional behavior.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Must possess a comprehensive understanding of the Critical Care Paramedic scope of practice, including all clinical procedures, patient care standards, and legal/regulatory requirements governing emergency medical services. This knowledge should encompass state and local protocols, documentation standards, infection control practices, and the ability to apply these principles effectively in both pre-hospital and hospital settings. Additionally, the Critical Care Paramedic should demonstrate proficiency in recognizing limitations of the role and collaborating with other healthcare professionals to ensure safe, high-quality patient care .
  • High school diploma or equivalent (GED).
  • Graduate of an approved Paramedic course with a current Iowa and/or Illinois Paramedic certification , or an Iowa RN Exemption and/or Illinois PHRN certification, based on role and service area . If working in the Genesis Market, need Iowa and Illinois within 120 days of hire or transfer.
  • Iowa Critical Care Paramedic endorsement required .
  • Maintain a valid driver’s license and an acceptable Motor Vehicle Report, meeting all organizational motor vehicle safety standards.
  • National Incident Management System (NIMS) - 100 (preferred).
  • American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) required .
  • American Heart Association Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) required .
  • American Heart Association Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) required .
  • Pre-Hospital Trauma Life Support (PHTLS) provider (preferred) .
  • Advance Medical Life Support (AMLS) provider (preferred) .
  • Proof of completion of Mandatory Reporter – Child and/or Dependent Adult Abuse training within three (3) months of hire.
  • Non-Violent Crisis Intervention (NVCI) within 6 months of hire .
  • Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) as applicable .
  • Emergency Vehicle Operator Course (EVOC) or equivalent within 1 year of hire.
  • Must be comfortable operating in a collaborative, shared leadership environment.
