Job summary

MercyOne Centerville Emergency Medical Services in Centerville, IA, seeks a full-time Critical Care Paramedic. You will deliver rapid, lifesaving pre-hospital and hospital care, perform advanced airway management, medication administration, and participate in stabilization and resuscitation per protocol.

The role requires current Iowa Paramedic certification (and endorsement), a valid driver’s license, and the ability to cover 24-hour shifts on a rotating schedule; full-time (1.0 FTE), 80 hours

Qualifications

  • Must hold a Paramedic license with Iowa and/or Illinois certification and be able to work in Centerville, IA.
  • Endorsement for Iowa Critical Care Paramedic required.
  • Knowledge of state/local EMS protocols and documentation standards.
  • Maintain valid driver’s license and safe driving record.
  • Federal/state regulatory familiarity (NIMS 100 preferred).

Responsibilities

  • Provide rapid, lifesaving care per protocol in pre-hospital and hospital settings.
  • Perform advanced airway management and administer approved medications.
  • Deliver age-appropriate care across neonate to geriatric populations.
  • Complete patient care documentation after each call and in- ED as needed.

POSITION PURPOSE

Delivers timely and effective critical care paramedic level emergency medical care to patients of all ages in both emergency and non-emergency situations, ensuring stabilization and/or resuscitation as needed due to illness or injury. Responds to ambulance calls, follows established system protocols and NIMS standards for scene management, and accurately document all care provided. When available, assists in the Emergency Department by performing advanced airway management, medication administration, and assists with delegated tasks such as assessments, vital signs, IV initiation, ECGs, and documentation, as well as decontamination, cleaning, and restocking of equipment.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Rapidly assess patients and provide lifesaving care according to protocol.
  • Initiate basic and advanced airway management.
  • Provide direct patient care in pre-hospital and hospital settings within the Critical Care Paramedic scope of practice, including the administration of approved medications.
  • Provide age-appropriate care across neonate, infant, child, adolescent, adult, and geriatric populations.
Transport & Operations
  • Operate ambulance safely; transport sick or injured persons while avoiding motions detrimental to patients.
  • Cover on-call hours and staff special events as directed to meet departmental needs.
Vehicle & Equipment Maintenance
  • Perform daily/weekly vehicle and rig checks; maintain, restock and clean unit after each run.
  • Manage EMS inventory; maintain pagers, radios and other equipment; report discrepancies and maintenance needs.
Documentation & Quality
  • Complete patient care documentation after each call and in the Emergency Department as needed.
  • Participate in peer review and chart audits.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Must possess a comprehensive understanding of the Critical Care Paramedic scope of practice, including all clinical procedures, patient care standards, and legal/regulatory requirements governing emergency medical services. This knowledge should encompass state and local protocols, documentation standards, infection control practices, and the ability to apply these principles effectively in both pre-hospital and hospital settings. Additionally, the Critical Care Paramedic should demonstrate proficiency in recognizing limitations of the role and collaborating with other healthcare professionals to ensure safe, high-quality patient care.
  • High school diploma or equivalent (GED).
  • Graduate of an approved Paramedic course with a current Iowa and/or Illinois Paramedic certification, or an Iowa RN Exemption and/or Illinois PHRN certification, based on role and service area. If working in the Genesis Market, need Iowa and Illinois within 120 days of hire or transfer.
  • Iowa Critical Care Paramedic endorsement required.
  • Maintain a valid driver’s license and an acceptable Motor Vehicle Report, meeting all organizational motor vehicle safety standards.
  • National Incident Management System (NIMS) - 100 (preferred).
  • American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) required.
  • American Heart Association Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) required.
  • American Heart Association Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) required.
  • Pre-Hospital Trauma Life Support (PHTLS) provider (preferred).
  • Advance Medical Life Support (AMLS) provider (preferred).
  • Proof of completion of Mandatory Reporter – Child and/or Dependent Adult Abuse training within three (3) months of hire.
