Job summary

The City of Durham invites applications for Crisis Response Clinicians to join the Durham Community Safety Department (DCSD). The role supports Crisis Call Diversion, Community Response Team, and Co-Response programs, providing behavioral health assessments and interventions during 911 responses.

Responsibilities include remote triage, in-person response support, and collaboration with police and partners. Start date anticipated September 8, 2026; full-time with benefits in Durham, NC.

Qualifications

• Master’s degree or higher in a related human services field.
• Licensed in LCAS/A, LCMHC/A, LCSW/A, or LMFT/A.
• Two years of relevant experience.
• Valid North Carolina Class C Driver’s license with satisfactory driving record within 60 days of hire.
• Ability to maintain HIPAA confidentiality.
• Must be able to travel to and from worksite within Durham.
• Must be able to walk/stand up to 75% of shift.

Responsibilities

• Respond to 911 calls involving behavioral health and crises using trauma-informed, person-centered approaches.
• Collaborate with crisis response team members to assess needs, de-escalate situations, and provide interventions.
• Screen and evaluate individuals in crisis and develop care plans.
• Provide follow-up support and ensure connection to services via warm handoffs or direct transport.
• Maintain knowledge of DSM-5 criteria for substance use and mental health conditions.
• Document interventions accurately per program and regulatory requirements.
• Build positive relationships with clients, staff, and community partners.
• Participate in supervision, case conferences, trainings, and professional development.
• Contribute to departmental planning and culture to improve crisis response.
• Demonstrate resilience and wellness practices relevant to first responder roles.
