Job summary

Sweetser in Maine seeks a Crisis Residential Counselor for Youth to provide direct care in a structured, therapeutic milieu, tutoring, transporting clients, and collaborating with families. This full-time role offers extensive training and growth opportunities.

Starting pay is $19 per hour with a $5,000 sign-on bonus. Schedule: Monday through Wednesday 8am–8pm, with potential advancement to CRC II after six months.

• Ability to meet licensing requirements and drive as needed.
• Fluent in spoken and written English for effective communication.
• Lived experience in mental health or substance use is encouraged.

Responsibilities

• Provide direct care as tutor, role model, cook and emotional support.
• Create and follow developmentally appropriate recreational activities.
• Transport clients to home visits and appointments.
• Maintain a safe therapeutic milieu through structured activities.
• Collaborate with staff and families to achieve treatment goals.

Reporting to the unit supervisor, the Child Crisis Residential Counselor (CRC) provides a safe and effective treatment milieu by participating in the provision of a structured, therapeutic environment in which clients, families, and natural supports can safely work on treatment.

This position offers the opportunity to advance up the career ladder to Crisis Residential Counselor II after 6 months in the role and after obtaining the required training and certifications. Successful completion of requirements comes with a $1 increase!

The ideal person would:

• Provide direct care by displaying the role of tutor, role model, cook and source of emotional support.
• Provide assistance by creating and following developmentally appropriate recreational activities.
• Transport clients to home visits, appointments, etc.
• Maintain a safe and effective milieu by participating in the provision of a structured, therapeutic environment.
• Collaborate with staff and families to achieve desired treatment outcomes.

JOB REQUIREMENTS:

• Desire to work with children in need.
• Clean and valid Maine driver's license.
• Persons with lived experience in the Mental Health and/or Substance Abuse system are encouraged to apply.
• Must be able to speak, read and write English fluently.

EDUCATIONAL/SKILLS/KNOWLEDGE REQUIREMENTS:

• High school diploma or GED with the ability to work with difficult-to-manage youth.
• Capacity to develop a professional orientation to child care.
• Ability to relate to children with warmth and understanding and have the ability to identify the needs and problems of children.
• Demonstrated ability to work cooperatively with other professionals on behalf of youth and their families.
