Job summary

National Youth Advocate Program (NYAP) is seeking a Contingent Crisis Clinician to join our on-site crisis response team in Rockford, IL. You will assess risk, provide crisis intervention, and connect individuals with immediate resources while collaborating with first responders and NYAP partners.

The role emphasizes de-escalation, safety planning, and follow-up care, with on-call hours as needed to support urgent community needs.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Social Work, Counseling, Psychology or related field from a CSWE accredited program.
• Experience in crisis response or related fields.
• Valid Illinois driver’s license and reliable transportation.
• Awareness of NASW Code of Ethics and strong communication skills.
• Proficient use of computer and software including word processing, spreadsheets and databases.

Responsibilities

• Provide live crisis support for individuals at imminent risk or requiring resources.
• Carry out crisis intervention and emotional support or transportation as needed.
• Establish rapport with crisis callers in a calm, non-judgmental manner.
• Conduct risk assessments including standardized screens.
• Coordinate with first-responders and schedule intake/outpatient follow-ups.

Contingent Crisis Clinician

Location: Rockford, IL

Salary: $21.63-$23.07/hour

Schedule: Contingent - On-call or periodically as needed

Position Summary

Under the Program Manager’s direction, the Crisis Clinician will work alongside first responders to provide on-site crisis intervention, de-escalation, and stabilization services for adults and children experiencing or who are at risk for experiencing a behavioral health crisis. These intensive supportive services are time-limited, designed to prevent additional behavioral health crises and mitigate adverse health outcomes. The Crisis Clinician will collaborate with local law enforcement, social service agencies, and various NYAP departments to offer solutions that utilize the Whole Person Approach to wellness. Clinicians are expected to work on-scene, conduct mental health assessments, engage in de-escalation, make appropriate referrals, and conduct follow-up services as needed.

Responsibilities

The Crisis Clinician will perform duties including, but not limited to:

• Perform all work in a manner consistent with the National Youth Advocate Program’s mission, values, and philosophies.
• Provide live crisis support for those at imminent risk of suicide, those in need of immediate resources; or those in need of emotional support.
• Provide crisis intervention, emotional support, or transportation services for parents, youth, and adults.
• Establish rapport with crisis hotline callers in a non-judgmental and calm voice.
• Assess risk through assessments including the “Ask Suicide-Screening Questionnaire.”
• Contact first-responders if the caller is at imminent risk of suicide.
• Schedule appointments for intake and outpatient follow-up care.
• Provide transportation when needed.
• Administer groups and training for support staff.
• Completes all follow-up care and home visits within the required time limits.
• Reassess safety and provide referrals for behavioral health and other needed services.
• Flexibility and willingness to participate in an on-call schedule as needed to support program operations.
• Performs other duties as requested.

Minimum Qualifications

• Personal Vehicle with Illinois State Driver’s License and full coverage auto insurance.
• Bachelor’s Degree in Social Work, Counseling, Psychology or related field from a CSWE accredited college or university.
• Previous experience in crisis response, substance abuse, juvenile justice, advocacy, mental health, or equivalent.
• An awareness or acceptance of the NASW Code of Ethics and is an effective and efficient communicator.
• Is committed to serving the underserved with dignity, compassion, and respect.
• Proficient use of desktop and laptop computers, smart phones and tablets, printers, fax machines and photocopiers as well as software including word processing, spreadsheet and database programs.
