The State of Alaska’s Department of Public Safety is seeking a Criminal Justice Technician to conduct comprehensive criminal history research in Anchorage. The role ensures accuracy of Alaska's criminal history repository and prepares eligible cases for review under the Marijuana Conviction Review Project.
The successful candidate will work with state and local agencies, verify records, and document findings while adhering to confidentiality and security requirements.
This position conducts comprehensive criminal history research to identify marijuana possession convictions that qualify for review under applicable state law. It ensures the accuracy, completeness, and integrity of Alaska criminal history records and the National Criminal History Repository. The position reviews and verifies criminal history records, court documents, charging instruments, judgments, and other source records to determine statutory eligibility. It coordinates with state and local criminal justice agencies to obtain missing documentation, resolve discrepancies, and reconcile records with federal repositories. The position documents research findings and prepares eligible cases for subsequent review and processing under the Marijuana Conviction Review Project.
The Criminal Records Unit processes all disposition information into the state’s criminal history repository. The repository is used by criminal justice and non-criminal justice agencies throughout Alaska and nationwide, and the information maintained in the repository is critical for public safety to ensure decisions based on criminal history records are made using the most complete and accurate information available.
Joining our team provides an opportunity to promote public safety and to provide support and technical assistance to law enforcement, other criminal justice agencies, non-criminal justice agencies, and the public throughout the state. This position is located in East Anchorage in the Department of Public Safety’s (DPS) Headquarters building at 5700 East Tudor Road, which includes the following: the Chugach Mountains providing the backdrop for the building, ample parking, public transportation drop points located directly in front of the building, and paved trails adjacent to the building. Individual office space for this position is co-located with other criminal records unit staff to encourage team building and collaborative efforts.

Successful completion of training under a formally established Criminal Justice Technician 1-2 flexible staffing training plan with the State of Alaska; OR Any combination of education and/or experience that provides the applicant with competencies in:
Equivalent to those typically gained by:Any combination of education and/or paraprofessional or professional experience or service in criminal justice, juvenile justice, probation, parole, public safety, law enforcement, corrections, court, legal services, law office, social services, social sciences, or public assistance programs or functions.

This position is flexibly staffed. This vacancy may be filled at either the 1 or 2 level, depending on the applicant's training and/or experience. The full range of salaries is listed above. Starting salary will be determined by the level the position is hired at. If filled at level 1, promotion to level 2 will occur upon successful completion of the probationary period and required training, as well as the applicant meeting the minimum qualifications of the higher job class.
This position requires the incumbent to submit to a fingerprint based criminal history background check. Due to the sensitive nature of this position, and required access to APSIN, an applicant with criminal convictions will not move forward in the selection process.
The successful candidate will be required to read, understand, and agree to via signature, an agreement of confidentiality concerning the work commonly encountered within the Department of Public Safety to qualify for this position.
