Organizational Location: This position is with the Department of Homeland Security, within U.S. Customs and Border Protection, Office of Professional Responsibility, Investigative Operations Directorate, in either: Yuma, AZ; Tucson, AZ; Sierra Vista, AZ; El Centro, CA; Los Angeles, CA; San Diego, CA; San Francisco, CA; Washington, DC; Miami, FL; Indianapolis, IN; Detroit, MI; New York, NY; Alpine, TX; Del Rio, TX; El Paso, TX; Laredo, TX; McAllen, TX; Seattle, WA.

Duties

This announcement will be open for 5 business days OR until the first 300 applications have been received, whichever happens first. The Criminal Investigator is responsible for coordinating and completing complex investigations involving misconduct, criminal activity, and/or corruption by CBP employees and related entities, leading or supporting investigative activities under CBP OPR jurisdiction. Responsibilities include:

  1. Employing agency authorities in support of investigations affecting national security and agency integrity.
  2. Gathering and analyzing information, evidence, and intelligence from various sources, including law enforcement databases and interviews.
  3. Serving as case agent for interagency investigations, representing OPR on task forces, and leading teams of agents and officers.
  4. Performing specialized investigative activities such as providing briefings, conducting investigations involving use of force, and preparing investigative reports.
Requirements

Applicants must:

  • Be U.S. Citizens.
  • Register with Selective Service if male and born after 12/31/1959.
  • Have primary U.S. residency for at least three of the last five years.
  • Pass background checks and polygraph.
  • Adhere to DHS drug-free workplace policies.
  • Possess a valid driver’s license and be able to operate a government vehicle.
Qualifications

For GS-12: 1 year of specialized experience in criminal investigations, including conducting investigations, drafting warrants, and preparing reports.

For GS-13: 1 year of experience in conducting investigations on misconduct, serving as case agent, and preparing legal documents like warrants and subpoenas.

Experience must be explicitly detailed in your resume to qualify.

Additional Information

This is a direct hire public notice. Category rating, veterans' preference, and traditional rating do not apply. You may need to obtain a Top Secret clearance, and there are age and veteran preference considerations. The position involves working beyond 40 hours, with extra pay (LEAP). Training includes the Criminal Investigator Training Program at FLETC or an approved equivalent. The position requires a medical exam, firearms qualification, polygraph, and drug testing. Residency requirements apply, and a probationary period of one year is standard for new federal employees.
