Job summary

Neighborhood Defender Service in Harlem seeks an Investigator to support the Criminal Defense Practice. You will collaborate with attorneys, social workers, and client advocates to prepare hearings and trials, and to gather information for defense theory.

You will interview witnesses, photograph crime scenes, collect and preserve evidence with proper chain-of-custody procedures, and help draft subpoenas, affidavits, and trial exhibits.

Qualifications

• Commitment to criminal justice, indigent defense, racial equity and social justice.
• Ability to quickly build relationships with people of varying identities, income levels, races and ethnicities.
• Clear and effective communication skills, both orally and in writing.
• Excellent organizational and multitasking abilities to handle a high caseload.

Responsibilities

• Embrace NDS' client-centered, holistic representation and provide investigative support to Harlem communities.
• Collaborate with attorneys, social workers, and client advocates to prepare hearings and trials.
• Interview witnesses and gather information relevant to defense theory and case planning.
• Visit, photograph, and diagram crime scenes and other locations.
• Collect, preserve, and document evidence with proper chain-of-custody procedures.
• Prepare, issue, and serve subpoenas; draft affidavits and trial exhibits.
• Conduct background research on witnesses and case-relevant parties.
• Testify credibly at trials, hearings, and depositions.
