Job description

Job Title: Criminal Defense Appellate Attorney

Job Overview:
A law firm based in Lubbock, TX, is seeking a seasoned Criminal Appellate Attorney to manage complex post-conviction litigation, including criminal appeals, writs of habeas corpus, expunctions, and nondisclosures. This is a fully remote opportunity, but candidates must be licensed to practice law in the state of Texas. The role emphasizes collaboration with trial counsel to support strategic preservation of appellate issues and includes full legal assistant support for document drafting, filings, and client communications.

Duties:

  1. Draft and argue appellate briefs, motions for rehearing, and habeas corpus petitions.
  2. Analyze trial transcripts for reversible error or constitutional violations.
  3. Represent clients in appeals before the Texas Courts of Appeals and the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals.
  4. Guide trial teams on issue preservation during pretrial and trial phases.
  5. Expunctions & Non-Disclosures
    Oversee end-to-end handling of expunction and non-disclosure petitions. Prepare and file legal documents; respond to objections and appear for hearings as needed (virtually or in-person). Maintain up-to-date knowledge of Texas laws governing criminal record relief.
  6. Trial-Level Legal Support
    Conduct legal research and assist in motion practice. Collaborate with trial attorneys on legal strategy for preserving appellate issues.
  7. Team Coordination
    Coordinate with dedicated legal support staff for case management, drafting, and client communication. Work within a collaborative team focused on client rehabilitation and second chances.

Requirements:

  1. Active license to practice law in the state of Texas.
  2. At least 7 years of hands-on experience in criminal appellate litigation and post-conviction relief.
  3. Demonstrated expertise in appellate writing and oral argument.
  4. Deep understanding of the Texas Code of Criminal Procedure and Appellate Procedure.
  5. Ability to manage multiple deadlines and maintain organized workflows.

Education:

Juris Doctor (JD) from an accredited U.S. law school.

Certifications:

Admission to the State Bar of Texas (required).
